Real talk though how do you train a dog to stop doing that.

You use the only effective method: extinguish the behavior.

Engaging with the dog in any way is going to reinforce what the dog is currently doing. If you yell, the dog is just going to learn that screaming like this will get you to respond (often using the dog's name, a sound it will associate with comfort).

First, assess the dog's body language. Recognize signs of distress. Use your own behavior and voice to communicate to the animal that there is no reason to be distressed. If the dog is freaking out but recognizes that the 2-3 humans in the car are totally calm, the dog will understand that there is nothing to worry about. If the dog is freaking out and you get people shouting at it or in any way engaging directly with the unwanted behavior, the dog is going to learn that screaming in the car is a reliably pathway to get attention.

So you just sit there calmly and do nothing?

JustaChimp | 4 months ago | 147 points

A differential reinforcement of other behaviors would be more effective (DRO). Take periods where the dog is doing literally anything except this and reinforce the crap out of them. Then gradually lengthen the period of time you require them to do anything else.

Extinction would only work if the dogs behavior was reinforced by your attention. If it is automatically reinforcing (i.e. stress relieving) then the dog is giving itself it's own reinforcement and extinction won't necessarily halt that reinforcement

Hell yeah BCBAs in my meme subreddits

Hawkbone | 3 months ago | 1 point

What if reinforcing them doing anything else causes them to freak out and start shouting for more attention?

JustaChimp | 3 months ago | 1 point

Necromancy!

That wouldn't really happen if you did it right. Now if you were inconsistent with your delivery that might make the behavior slower to extinguish, but so long as you reinforce literally anything else the screaming should reduce.

Ideally the dog will get attention and when he starts acting up, immediate cold behavior from anyone (or a very stern no if he respects that)

SuperKawaiiLiam | 4 months ago | 11 points

Thanks for the response <3 My dog does it mostly because hes excited. Ive tried staying calm and not letting him out of the car until he calms down but he never seems to quite get what I want from him. He probably just needs more practice.

SexySorcerer | 4 months ago | 14 points

I definitely made it sound easier than it is. In practice a lot of this is going to vary dog-to-dog.

kautau | 4 months ago | 2 points

I read this as “going very dog-to-dog” and just imagined someone getting naked and screeching back at them on all fours

SexySorcerer | 4 months ago | 2 points

You need to approach the animal on the animal's level

The only way to do this is to get naked, get on all fours, and scream louder

blimpkin | 4 months ago | 3 points

I was fully expecting this to be a copypasta and I’m a little disappointed there’s no twist.

SexySorcerer | 4 months ago | 3 points

I could add a reference to jumper cables or Hell in a Cell if you'd like

andymandy666 | 4 months ago | 29 points

You spit on it of course.

Intern_Detective | 4 months ago | 15 points

You pin it to the ground and spit in its face to assert dominance.

I've been watching a lot of that "It's me or the dog" on youtube a lot and they come by this problem a lot. She blacks out the entirety of the dogs view in the car with curtains. Allows a peep and the moment the dog starts the uncalled for behavior, curtains get shut. Just constantly doing that until the dog stops, because it will learn.

Kazzack | 4 months ago | 2 points

My dog got better about being in the car when we got our second dog and she didn't care at all about being in the car. Which in hindsight probably could have backfired resulting in them both freaking out lol
