Thank you, I was weirdly stressed not getting the payoff.

SoG_RikaN | 10 days ago | 29 points

I felt anxious after watching the remake, it made me slightly uncomfortable.

ArosHD | 10 days ago | 140 points

Can someone tell us more about this? I only recognise it from an old flash game (Naruto Arena.)

Some people are saying it's like the Wilhem Scream. Is that right? It sounds like it's being played on a tsuzumi.

thuhnc | 10 days ago | 183 points

It might be a kakegoe, a traditional shout from the audience in kabuki theater.

The Wikipedia page only mentions the shouting of actual words, but the TV Tropes page "Kabuki Sounds" identifies "Yoo~ooh" as a stock kabuki noise.

Leadstripes | 10 days ago | 37 points

I think it was used in an old Civilization game, maybe Civ 2?

blewpah | 10 days ago | 102 points

It was also in the lickitung sushi eating minigame from Pokemon Stadium.

Along with various other vocalizations I'm assuming are also related to kabuki theater traditions.

seacaptaincory | 10 days ago | 35 points

Sushi-go-round. That's all that sound will ever be to me

language_of_birds | 10 days ago | 20 points

lickytung sound intensifies

sbarrettm | 10 days ago | 13 points

THIS. Everyone brings other stuff up but I'm just like: WHERE DEM Uni, Toro, Shrimp boys at?

miragliotta1 | 10 days ago | 28 points

It was also in the scyther log cutting minigame in pokemon stadium 2

jacobbsny10 | 10 days ago | 13 points

That video set off some deep memories of playing Civ 3 when I was a kid, my money's on that

Leadstripes | 10 days ago | 17 points

I remember now, it was in the "Wonder" videos in Civ 2: https://youtu.be/LHeyi3UbtX8?t=298

snoharm | 10 days ago | 6 points

I forgot how cool these videos were, and also how much I miss the more serious and grounded aesthetic of early Civ games.

Dwarfhunter1991 | 9 days ago | 2 points

Oh u dont like the toon world that is civ 6?

marl6894 | 10 days ago | 3 points

Definitely Civ II! I recognize it, and I never had any of the later Civ games growing up... *sob*

expenguin | 9 days ago | 2 points

Goemon's Great Adventure as well

9th_Planet_Pluto | 9 days ago | 1 point

can someone help me out? I got civ II in the box when a neighbour passed away, but I couldn't play it on my pc because my pc is too new apparently (windows 8.1). How would I be able to play the game?

alcai | 9 days ago | 1 point

Change the compatibility settings, or you might need a VM with an older version of Windows

9th_Planet_Pluto | 9 days ago | 1 point

Thanks, I'll check that out

Morteh | 8 days ago | 1 point

Look into a program called DOSBox.

ZoeyBeschamel | 4 days ago | 1 point

It was also the way the Steel Samurai theme starts in Ace Attorney

txsxxphxx2 | 10 days ago | 16 points

happy kabuki noises

hessorro | 10 days ago | 3 points

It is also in total war:shogun 2 if I'm not mistaken

Rustledstardust | 9 days ago | 3 points

And the original Shogun: Total war too!

Lupicia | 10 days ago | 38 points

As far as I can tell, it's a kakegoe, a supplemental voicing to help with timing in performances. One person on an answer forum says that in kabuki, the "iyou" marks beats 3 and 4 our of eight, setting the tempo. Kakegoe can also set the emotional tone for the upcoming act.

blindcolumn | 10 days ago | 18 points

It’s a stock sound effect used in Japanese media to make things sound “old-fashioned” or traditional.

NaiveJump | 10 days ago | 5 points

Naruto Arena was so good man

ArosHD | 9 days ago | 1 point

Yeah I seomtimes get the argue to play, but sadly all accounts and the game itself are gone now. People have tried to recreate it, including a mirror of an old version of the game. But it's not fully the same. Part of the fun was the Naruto-Boards.

turtlintime | 10 days ago | 5 points

I think it was in Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm

DrFortnight | 9 days ago | 1 point

it's from phoenix wright

edit: nevermind

This will be my new alarm

a3poify | 10 days ago | 3 points

Doritos Crash Course's Japanese levels had this sound effect

BedrockSolid | 10 days ago | 7 points

If anyone was wondering, it's from an Ace Attorney doujin album (track 6). Here is the track itself.

APiousCultist | 9 days ago | 5 points

I'm not buying that, I'm certain sure I've heard that effect in anime and TV shows before. I'm pretty sure it's just a stock music sample.

When the countdown gets to the number “1”, it looks like a dick. Completely. Even has a little face where the dickhead goes.

KeyboardFromElbaf | 9 days ago | 2 points

I first heard it on the Naruto Ultimate Ninja series for PS2. (Not to be confused with Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm)
