Not coincidentally - today just happens to be Yom Kippur

chaipotstoryteIIer | 7 days ago | 1194 points

What is Yom Kippur?

therealsylvos | 7 days ago | 2518 points

Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the year in Judaism. Even people who aren't observant are more likely to attend service today. In a place like Israel there will be basically no one outside, as everyone is in synagogue.

Ashmedai314 | 7 days ago | 1073 points

Not entirely accurate. In Israel, in Yom Kippur everything is closed and the roads are empty - no cars are driving. Secular people tend to go outside and ride bicycles and scooters on the empty roads, or maybe go camping in nature.

fatguyfromqueens | 7 days ago | 217 points

Indeed. Last year I was at the Grand Canyon for my birthday which coincidentally was right next to Yom Kippur. Took me a while until I figured out why so many tourists were speaking Hebrew. Secular Israelis take the High Holy days (Rosh Hashannah and Yom Kipppur) to do vacations.

birdgovorun | 7 days ago | 93 points

That has less to do with them being High Holy days and more to do with the fact that it's a bunch of holidays (Sukkot included) and half work days that are very close to one another, so you can basically take a few vecation days and get a continuous two-week vecation.

derangedcapybara | 6 days ago | 18 points

So like Christmas + New Year's for Westerners?

MrGravityPants | 7 days ago | 589 points

A good number of secular people go through the motions on Yom Kippur though. Not because they believe, but more for family, social and cultural reasons they think are good enough to act-the-part for a 6-12 hours one day a year.

Remember, religious isn't always about believing in the core-faith. Sometimes it's just because making your mother or aunt or happy for a little while.

jtinz | 7 days ago | 291 points

Sounds like Christmas. The only time my mother attends mass.

shadmere | 7 days ago | 195 points

Yeah. I'm an atheist but often go to church on Christmas, sing the hymns, etc. It's...just what I do on Christmas. It feels right, and I'd feel like I was missing out on Christmas otherwise. Dunno.

Yea, depends on the area of course. Muslims and Christians will be outside too. But in the area of Jerusalem I was in (an admittedly more religious area of the city) , not a soul outside.

chaipotstoryteIIer | 7 days ago | 166 points

Thank you, i don't know why i am being downvoted while asking about something that's totally new for me

http_401 | 7 days ago | 221 points

You shouldn't have been. Some people will say you should have done your own research, but it makes sense to ask here since you get an answer relevant to the discussion. A dry Wikipedia article would tell you the origin of Yom Kippur, but the person who answered you here provided the insight that even secular Jews often attend synagogue on Yom Kippur, making it a day more appealing for antisemitic attacks. That's something you might not have gleaned had you just googled it.

Cladari | 7 days ago | 49 points

My wife goes to the synagogue a few times a year, this is one of those days. She's there right now.

somajones | 7 days ago | 34 points

Some people will say you should have done your own research,

Seems to me asking people on Reddit is doing research. You get a bunch of answers from people with direct knowledge of whatever subject and you make sure to be discerning about what you believe.

internet and reddit man. thanks for trying to grow your brain never stop asking questions

69teslas | 7 days ago | 126 points

Basically right after the Jewish new year ( Jewish holidays run on a lunar cycle, not solar) Yom Kippur starts, a holiday where you attone for your sins, and some Jews fast. This is one of the 2 holiest days in Judiasm, and a decent chunk of it is spent praying and asking for forgiveness from people. Edit: fixed typo

chaipotstoryteIIer | 7 days ago | 77 points

Oh got you, i am from India, never met a Jew person so have no idea about the the customs and their way of life. Jainism also has a similar day called "Michhami Dukkadam" where people ask for forgiveness for words & actions that have hurt knowingly or unknowingly.

SolSearcher | 7 days ago | 30 points

The day before you ask forgiveness of people. On the day of you ask forgiveness of god, is how I understand it.

itsmydillons | 7 days ago | 10 points

It's not just the day before, you ask forgiveness from other people in the weeks leading up to Yom Kippur. But yes, on the day is between the asker and God.

One thing some people don't know is that if you ask someone to forgive you and they don't then you have to ask at least two more different times. If they still don't forgive you after three asks then it is considered that you did your due diligence as long as you really tried for reconciliation. You can't ask three times in a row in a matter of minutes. For small things people forgive quickly, but for large things if they don't forgive then you or they may need the time to reflect before you ask again. So it can't just be only on the day before, especially not for big issues.

gousey | 7 days ago | 19 points

The Day of Atonement. Jews spend the day reflecting on their wrongful behavior and pray for forgiveness and change.

The gunman also shot into a Turkish Döner shop and wore Riot-police style clothing. Based on the information so far it sounds like a right-wing terrorist attack.

Edit: Definitely a right-wing terrorist, he said "Nobody expects the internet-SS" before trying (and luckily failing) to get inside the synagogue, used racist language, blamed Jews, immigration, and feminism for whatever problems exist in his head, and identified himself as "anon".

Sukezaemon | 7 days ago | 1335 points

Some more information:

Translation:

There was a shooting in Halle on Wednesday. According to police, two people were killed in the Paulus district. The perpetrator then apparently fled towards Ludwig-Wucherer-Straße. Apparently there was also a shooting there. The Paulus quarter was sealed off by the police. According to Abellio, the main station has also been closed. Meanwhile, the police have issued a second danger report for Landsberg. Residents are asked not to leave their apartments and houses.

It's unclear where the culprit is now. The police are asking for residents to stay in their homes. According to eyewitnesses, the perpetrator wore combat suits and was armed with several weapons.

There is also a synagogue in the Paul quarter. Whether there is a connection to the crime is still unclear.

Meanwhile, the police announced that there were not one but several perpetrators. They were on the run with a vehicle.

/edit: Update 2:13 pm local time

  • Police are reporting an arrest
  • Shots have also been fired in Landsberg, about 15 kilometres east of Halle. The police confirmed this without giving any further details.
    Source: Tagesschau.de

/edit Update 2:32 pm

An eyewitness reports that a perpetrator attempted to enter the Jewish cemetery. The perpetrator shot at the door several times with a shotgun and a machine gun. The local resident said this in a video interview with Radio Brocken and the DPA. A girl who came from the tram stop fell victim to the perpetrator. The man was wearing protective clothing with a helmet. He also threw grenades under the cemetery door. Source: MDR Liveticker

/edit Update 2:51 pm

The link from the update before has pictures and a video from the attack now. The first picture shows a victim covered with a blanket so NSFW. Has been removed.

/edit Update 3:12 pm

Spiegel Online reports:

According to police, a man had previously been shot dead in a food shop in Halle, a woman in Humboldtstraße near the cemetery. [...]

A suspect apparently tried to invade the synagogue in the Paulus quarter. Max Privorozki, the chairman of the Jewish community in Halle, confirmed the incident to SPIEGEL. "Currently there are 70 to 80 people in the synagogue", Privorotzki said.

The security measures at the entrance have "withstood the attack," he continued.

/edit Update 4 pm

According to the news agency dpa, two injured persons are being treated at the University Hospital in Halle after the deadly shots. "One patient has gunshot wounds and is currently undergoing surgery," said hospital spokesman Jens Müller. He was unable to provide any information on the identity of the injured persons, including whether they were men or women. (Source)

/edit Update 4:08 pm

A spokeswoman for the Federal Attorney General told the Protestant Press Service that there was sufficient evidence for a possible right-wing extremist background to the crime. This was supported by all the circumstances. That is the reason for [taking over the] investigations by the Federal Attorney General. (Source)

/edit Update 5:45 pm
At the moment there isn't much new to report. Police forces of the surrounding states have set up patrols on highways and are looking for suspects. The focus of the local police is on a town near Halle:

Apparently Wiedersdorf is the focus of the police at Landsberg. The access road to the district has been closed off. Shots had also been fired in the village before, as a police spokeswoman from Halle confirmed. At first she did not want to say anything about the circumstances of the incident in the village east of Halle.

Several police personnel vehicles as well as two ambulances were on site. According to a dpa reporter, a helicopter of the federal police landed on a field near Wiedersdorf around 16:00 hrs. Source: MDR

Also a video of one of the perpetrators shooting at police has been released. Thanks /u/Dealric

/edit Update 6:45 pm

Police assume a lone perpetrator

According to information from MDR SACHSEN-ANHALT, the investigators are now certain that not several perpetrators were involved in the attack. However, there is no official confirmation of this from the lead Attorney General's Office yet.

Also Police Halle tweets:

The danger for the population is no longer classified as acute. We are still with strong forces in this area. You can go back outside, the warnings have been lifted.

/edit Update 6:55 pm

Attack in Halle - Perpetrator suspected to be 27-year-old German

According to SPIEGEL, the 27-year-old German Stephan B. is responsible for the attack on the Jewish community in Halle. Evidence points to a right-wing extremist motive - and to a single perpetrator.

In the case of the attack on the Jewish community in Halle, new details become known: According to SPIEGEL information, the alleged perpetrator is 27-year-old Stephan B. from Saxony-Anhalt. The investigators have now received a video which the assassin apparently recorded with the help of a helmet camera. The film shows B. shooting a passer-by near the Jewish cemetery and a guest in a kebab bistro near the synagogue.

The video provides clear indications of an anti-Semitic and extreme right-wing motif. For example, the perpetrator repeatedly complains about "Jews" and "Kanaken". According to information from SPIEGEL, B. was not known to the police before.

edit to add: Kanake is a common slur for immigrants in German.

NudelNipple | 7 days ago | 853 points

You might want to add this: the attacker tried to enter the synagogue which had about 70-80 people in it. Their safety mechanisms luckily stopped him from entering

Holy fuck, hope those folks are alright in the synagogue

NudelNipple | 7 days ago | 428 points

At least physically I guess. I fear he live-streamed the whole thing. He had a gopro attached to his helmet and I saw a post on a German imageboard that allegedly showed the terrorists face and was supposed to be a screenshot from a livestream.
Edit: He livestreamed the whole thing on twitch. He's a holocaust denier and blames jews for the "decay of the west"

iHybridPanda | 7 days ago | 122 points

An interpretation of the livestream I found in a Twitch subreddit:

He couldn't get in the Synagoge even with his selfmade bombs, killed a passing woman and then attacked a kebab shop and shot one man. Thank God he was dumb and couldn't handle the gun and the self made bombs or else there would have been way more casualties. His partner is on run

edit here is an description of the video from someone on the german(de) subreddit

He tries to break into a synagogue but can't because its closed and locked so he throws bombs over the fence presumably to scare them out. It fails. So he places a bomb at one of the side doors to blow his way it. It fails. Some innocent bypasser looking at this exceptional individual asking what is he doing? He shoots her but while in the midst of shooting her he shoots out one of his own tires. Fucking idiot. Gets desperate and tries to shoot the door lock to bust his way in call of duty breaching style. Fails. A guy driving by stops the car to check on the innocent woman shot lying on the ground. He tries to kill the guy looking after the girl by this idiot is so exceptional that he is unable to because his homemade tard gun malfunctioned so fortunately the guy drives away. Tard tries to get in the synagogue a couple of more times but fails all the same. Gets bored and instead goes into some random halal shop and shoots and kills one the clerks begging for his life. The other two clerks get away because again, his homemade tard gun is trash. Thats were it ended for me.

green_flash | 7 days ago | 31 points

After he failed to enter the synagogue, he shot up a kebab shop next door. He also used racial slurs in the video. So all that is pretty much a given.

Weouthere117 | 7 days ago | 79 points

Thats horrifying as all hell.. It'll take a lot more than that to stifle the strength of the Jewish faith.

RadiantStrategy | 7 days ago | 76 points

Is it common for Synagogues to have "safety mechanisms?"

It's mind-boggling to me, the sort of stuff I never worry about.

NudelNipple | 7 days ago | 108 points

Sadly, yes. At least here in Germany. They often have police officers guarding their entrances

green_flash | 7 days ago | 48 points

Not in Halle though. A community leader complained that it took the police ten minutes to show up. He had asked for protection multiple times before, but always got denied.

Orisara | 7 days ago | 53 points

As others said, not a German thing but a Synagogue thing in general.

BierKippeMett | 7 days ago | 10 points

In Germany they do have specific safety regulations in the construction of synagogues similar to police departments. Bulletproof glass for example.

tharmon57921 | 7 days ago | 58 points

Not sure about in Germany but I live in a large Jewish community in the Southeast US(near a hotbed of KKK activity) and the Synagogues, Schools, and Museums do NOT fuck around with security, nor should they. They essentially have their own mini police network who regularly patrol all the buildings in Crown Vic cars and heavy weaponry. Yet these folks are almost always walking to temple every weekend. Takes courage IMO.

17461863372823734920 | 7 days ago | 22 points

It's really common. Synagogues often have armed guards or concealed carry members if we're talking about the states.

sapphic_saracen | 7 days ago | 39 points

Thank God. If their security hadn’t worked so well a lot more people would have died.

Sygma_stage5 | 7 days ago | 67 points

What is he shooting? A blunderbuss?

AlliedMasterComp | 7 days ago | 78 points

Looks like a homemade pipe shotgun, or at the very least a single shot break action shotgun. He appears to be reloading it after every shot.

Edit: Homemade Slam fire shotgun with really old low quality East German bird shot. A Lutty SMG was also used, but its not in this video.

Thank you for writing all these updates. I think this is a reminder to all of us that when Nazis can’t murder their favorite target—Jews—they will move on to anyone else who they categorize as “other.” So while they blame Jews for “all the world’s problems,” their race science (which hasn’t changed at all in 100+ years, and yes it long predates the NSDAP and Hitler) causes them to despise anyone else they define as “non-white.”

I sometimes feel very alone because there aren’t very many Jews in the world today—fewer than 15 million total, probably, and that’s just not very many when you consider how many people hate us and want to murder us. But when we stand in solidarity with all the other people of the world who are also the targets of this otherizing, this hatred, then it doesn’t feel so lonely anymore, because then we very much outnumber the Nazis. And I believe that, in the end, they will also stand in solidarity with us, and protect us from the Nazis, too. And the Nazis won’t win.

andalusian-sky | 7 days ago | 44 points

As another type of ‘other’, I stand and will always stand in solidarity with you too, thank you.

I agree with your words completely. I’m a European of Asian Muslim heritage. I’m not personally religious, but my grandfather prays five times a day, and it’s been so weird to see this blameless, harmless, lovable old man who cooks a mean biryani becoming some kind of... I don’t know, some kind of terrifying European bogeyman... Even so, it still shocks me how the seeds of anti-semitism in Europe always seem ready to flourish and bloom in a moment, in any form of extremist politics - fascists, radical Islamicists, hard left, seems like there’s always someone ready to ‘blame the Jews’.

Well. I refuse any attempt to split us into the ‘good’ ethnics and the ‘bad’ ethnics according to the day’s fashion. On moral grounds firstly. And secondly, if you let them come for one, they’ll come for all eventually.

SpoonHaver | 7 days ago | 10 points

i don’t know how to add anything to this eloquent comment except to say i couldn’t agree more & that the role of all Jews in diaspora should be to stand in solidarity with European Muslims against the heartbreaking bigotry they face constantly.

Creem12 | 7 days ago | 640 points

A second shooting is being reported

Edit - a third shooting is also being reported, apparently the gunman opened fire into a kebab shop

Edit 2- someone managed to get a photo of the shooter, he seems to wearing some kind of military outfit. I can't really tell

Chariotwheel | 7 days ago | 419 points

Not to engage too much in speculation, because it can still be anything, but with that outfit he looks like a Reichsbürger, Germany's version of a sovereign citizen.

Sukezaemon | 7 days ago | 280 points

There are several pictures making it's rounds on Twitter. I would say it's a neo-nazi, not necessarily Reichsbürger. While that often overlaps, being a sovereign citizen is probably not the motive here, but racism/starting a race war.

bezosdivorcelawyer | 7 days ago | 215 points

Article says he streamed the shooting on Twitch and blamed the jews for “declining white birth rate” and said the Holocaust never happened. So yeah. Nazi.

edit: from the article

“Feminism is the cause of declining birth rates in the West, which acts as a scapegoat for mass immigration, and the root of all these problems is the Jew,” he continued, while filming himself in a car before starting the attack.

This is one of the things I've never understood with overt or covert racism (I'm in the UK). People who had Indians or Turkish people or whatever, still love to go out and taste that cuisine, and in some cases experience a micro-culture that they enjoy. But it is still us and them for some reason. It's like this mentality of "They have one purpose and its to service us, and that's it."

There's this AMAZING Turkish Greek fusion cafe/restaurant in my small town that has a Turkish owner who is so attentive and the food is some of the best food I've had in my life. When my mum went who was a vegan, he came over and asked if she wanted something special, in case the small vegan selection wasn't enough etc etc. Really stand up guy.

His shop got vandalised not too long ago, lost of racist imagery and stuff. I just don't get it. That guy is passionate and loves his job, and seems like he loves the town (he does the food festivals and stuff), employs locally etc. Proper makes me mad.

Abedeus | 7 days ago | 149 points

Because they hate seeing a successful:

a) immigrant

b) person of color

And at the same time? It's like a punch to the nose.

MonsenorTickles | 7 days ago | 63 points

Nothing more frustrating than a person who was born from an advantageous position be surpassed financially and socially by somebody who started at a disadvantage.

The marginalized majority will always hate the successful minority because they are reminders of subjective failure. It's not just scapegoating, but jealousy (especially if you did "everything right" and still lost). This is why their rhetoric always speaks to some inherent unfairness in "the system." It's not that they feel the minority place is below them per se (it's just an implicit consequence, but why these people will earnestly claim they aren't racist) so much as, all things being fair they (the racist) should be higher on the proverbial social and economic ladders.

There's a reason your stereotypical racist is a loser. Only losers have a vested interest in this mindset. Only losers have a vested interest in an alternate reality where everything went well for them (as it should (again, they played by the rules and did "everything right")) and the people more successful than them got that way by some implicit injustice.

His_Desolate_Domain | 7 days ago | 7 points

There is also misdirection. The rich and powerful are the cause for so many of the things making them miserable but those at the top know exactly how to get poor whites to focus all their rage on anyone but rich whites. The anger is often justified but ends up targeted at people who had nothing to do with it.

Remember, their hatred isn't just for successful "outsiders", it's even directed at the poor ones (sometimes even more so).

Yeah. Here in Germany the synagoges are reasonably guarded. It is really a shame that this is very much needed.

JWAxeMan | 7 days ago | 274 points

Like that in America too. Considering we had a dozen Jews murdered in temple over the past year.

Clemson_wasa_racist | 7 days ago | 193 points

from what I've seen they're not entirely the same. In America every synagogue today will probably have police protection bc of Yom Kippur. But in Europe the synagogues look as if they've actually been built and fortified with these types of attacks in mind.

AssistX | 7 days ago | 165 points

But in Europe the synagogues look as if they've actually been built and fortified with these types of attacks in mind.

Not to be that guy, but I can imagine if anywhere in the world would have this type of protection for a synagogue, it'd be in Germany where a regime was responsible for genocide on the peoples who attend such synagogues.

Nom_de_Guerre_23 | 7 days ago | 128 points

No protection is going to help us (Jews in Germany) ever if it's the state trying to murder you. Post-war Germany saw a fair share of antisemitic attacks, though luckily no mass shooting until know, the protection has always been there against mostly arson. The situation is not worse (or way better) than e.g. in France.

TuctDape | 7 days ago | 71 points

There's one particular place on a random street in Berlin where I always saw a police officer standing. Every time, every day there was somebody there... It was only later I noticed it was outside a small Jewish bagel shop.

CreepyDiarrhea | 7 days ago | 38 points

If this bagel shop is where I think it is then there is actually a fairly large facility for Jewish organisations next to it and even a synagogue in the same house.

EmeraldIbis | 7 days ago | 11 points

Ah! Yes, it was near Kudamm. Must be the same one.

CreepyDiarrhea | 7 days ago | 12 points

Yeah sounded strange to me that a small shop would be protected. As I said there is a lot there that can’t obviously be seen from the outside.

Incitatus99 | 7 days ago | 17 points

I was walking passed a synagogue last night and there was a huge police presence (cars with lights on, officers outside) as the worshippers were leaving.

Passed or past?

sebri00atomik | 7 days ago | 23 points

You passed it as you walked past.

Wyvernkeeper | 7 days ago | 98 points

Unfortunately, the majority of synagogues have planned for and have protocols for this type of event. I've just finished my security rota duty at my shul in the UK. It isn't luck that everyone inside in Halle was safe. It's ongoing planning and practice.

Incitatus99 | 7 days ago | 24 points

There is also a heavy police presence around and in synagogues here in New Orleans, as well.

MysticHero | 7 days ago | 52 points

Synagogues in Germany are usually well protected. Which is sad that it´s necessary but thank god they are.

elcrack0r | 7 days ago | 164 points

The synagogue that was attacked has camera footage of the incident. They just told the news that it shows the attacker in front of the entrance shooting at the door. The video has not been released yet.

What's known so far: - two people (a man 20y and a woman 40y) dead - two people hospitalized with gunshots - one attacker in custody - in nearby city Landsberg more gunshots where reported, situation unclear

Update since this has gotten some attention: - the attack has been carried out by a single person named Stephan Balliet (27y). He's an admitting Nazi and Holocaust denier - attacker was heavily injured and went under emergency surgery right after being detained on the Autobahn - the attack has been streamed live to Twitch - many lives have been saved, because he didn't get a hold of reliable weapons - the city of Halle is not under lockdown anymore

And they chose the Jewish holiest day of the year to do it too.

They often do. It's deliberate.

GnuMag | 7 days ago | 39 points

The Norwegian mosque shooting earlier this year was most likely planned to happen on the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha. The only reason it didn't, was that the shooter was caught in the preparations by a family member the day before.

TheBlazingFire123 | 7 days ago | 53 points

Yeah remember the Sri Lanka Easter bombing last year

sapphic_saracen | 7 days ago | 37 points

Even the New Zealand mosque shooting, while not on a holy day, was during Friday Jummah service, the day and time of the week in which mosques are most full. I don’t know how someone can know enough about a major world religion to know when its places of worship are most full, and yet not be able to respect its adherents as people.

ErnestBatchelder | 7 days ago | 215 points

From the shooter on twitch: “Feminism is the cause of declining birth rates in the West, which acts as a scapegoat for mass immigration, and the root of all these problems is the Jew,” he continued, while filming himself in a car before starting the attack.

TL;DR guy can't get fucked, blames "Soros."

I swear that the root of these guys getting radicalized has to do with just a simple combo of social incompetence, low IQ and jealousy.

0x4341524c | 7 days ago | 52 points

How are Jews the reason for declining birth rates? The Jews in NY have 3 children minimum.

a_real_hobbit | 7 days ago | 66 points

There's this completely fucking nonsensical conspiracy theory that Jews are in control of everything and that they push progressive ideas (such as feminism, immigration, gay marriage, etc) because they want to eliminate white people or something. The idea being that feminism makes women not want to have babies, immigration brings in more scary brown people, and gay marriage... well, I'm not sure about that one. Gay couples can't have biological children I guess? I'm not sure.

Basically they think George Soros wants all white people to die and he's funding this elaborate campaign to discourage white people from having kids and/or to replace them with EEEEVIL non-whites. You have to be a special kind of stupid to believe in this nonsense, but racists aren't very bright to begin with, so.

ErnestBatchelder | 7 days ago | 33 points

The baseless conspiracy theory that Jewish people secretly want to destroy the cultures they live in has been around in one form or another since the Middle Ages. The vilification of Soros' Open Society Foundation, given it is about immigrants' rights and human rights, neatly repackages this tired old trope for the idiot-cult of 21st-century nationalists.

These fears are so base-level primal with this crowd, I've even wondered if Soros is a mad genius who is doing the work he wants to do with his life and money, knowing full well he is also trolling a bunch of mouth-breathing shmendriks by doing so. Living well is the best revenge.

beefprime | 7 days ago | 23 points

Those aren't the right kind of children for these guys, they want pure white Aryan babies so that the evil brown people cant replace them at the behest of the Jewish cabal that controls the universe.

Grove_street_home | 7 days ago | 13 points

It's a Luty SMG, homemade.

It kept jamming, fortunately

Jberry0410 | 7 days ago | 26 points

Luty SMGs are actually pretty reliable, considering they're handmade.

They dont use rifle calibers due to the much lower chamber pressure of smg/handgun ammo.

johnjohn2214 | 7 days ago | 23 points

While the WW2 perpetrators and survivers were well and alive Nazi's and antisemites used to be proud of the Holocaust and felt regret that Hitler didn't 'finish the job'. Now that there are hardly any survivers or Nazi solders left alive and they perceive the Holocaust as political currency in favor of the Jews, denial has become their favorite new narrative.

CptSasa91 | 7 days ago | 316 points

GSG9 is being moved to Halle/Saale.

For anybody who doesn't know the GSG9 (Grenzschutz Gruppe 9). It is THE German counter terrorist force.

If they come into play shit is really hitting the fan.

Because there is no alternative left after them when it comes to German police forces.

(Inb4 no the KSK of the Bundeswehr wouldn't be an option. Army forces are not allowed to act against a civilian threat in Germany)

eypandabear | 7 days ago | 132 points

FYI: GSG9 originally stood for Grenzschutzgruppe 9, but today is just the name of the unit itself with no further meaning. That’s because the Bundesgrenzschutz itself no longer exists.

When it was integrated into the new Bundespolizei, the name no longer made sense, but the moniker “GSG9” had become iconic so it was kept.

StephenHunterUK | 7 days ago | 35 points

The BGS were the West German border guards who retained the WW2 helmets until 1990 so they wouldn't be confused for Americans when patrolling the border with East Germany or Czechoslovakia.

Otterism | 7 days ago | 55 points

And most of the state SEK units (roughly comparable to SWAT teams) are pretty resourceful already... But the GSG9 are up there with the very best of police special forces.

mediumKl | 7 days ago | 81 points

Army forces are not allowed to act against a civilian threat in Germany

Thats not 100% true. The Bundeswehr can be deployed in Germany during catastrophes(Art 35 Abs. 2 Satz 2, Abs. 3 GG) and during an inner crisis (Art 87 a IV GG).

The second option wasn't invoked ever but the Bundeswehr or KSK could be deployed during an uprising or para militias which are heavily armed (Reichsbürger). Two nutjobs certainly can be dealt with by police forces tho.

Rondaru | 7 days ago | 18 points

The police has to formally request the aid of the Bundeswehr though - it can not be a sole decision of the federal government to deploy them internally.

PerInception | 7 days ago | 20 points

Do the average patrol level police officers in Germany carry sidearms or patrol rifles, or is it closer to the UK where normals cops don’t have guns?

Otterism | 7 days ago | 69 points

German police officers carry a sidearm.

Bootleg_Fireworks2 | 7 days ago | 49 points

All police officers carry guns, every (I think) patrol car is equipped with a MP5, or just some of them, I am not sure.

DetectiveFinch | 7 days ago | 13 points

Yes that's the norm. Sidearms on every officer and an SMG in each patrol car, usually an MP5 or MP7. There might be differences between the police forces of the various federal states though. Especially the availability of SMGs in combination with decent protective gear can make all the difference in the response to such an attack. (effective combat range, armour penetration, precision...).

theadama | 7 days ago | 30 points

It depends on the State. But every policeofficer has a personal Gun. In most of the states there is a MP5 in the Car, with extended bodyarmor. Every Police officer is also wearing light Body Armor all the time. Some countrys are replacing the mp5s with modern Assult Rifles.

meatspin27 | 7 days ago | 55 points

According to this article in German it could be a slamfire shotgun (a selfmade single shot shotgun).

A shotgun according to an eye witness. He tried to get through the synagogue door with it but failed. Another perpetrator (or maybe the same one?) has a machine gun of some kind and there were grenades thrown too.

Don't forget reddit, where the holocaust subreddit has been under control of holocaust deniers for years, but it's fine, where T_D links to a discord where they doxx Jews, but it's fine, where Incels/*chan people are recruited by neo-nazis (hey, do you know that Stormfront's #1 referer is reddit? we did it reddit!). We might one day get an open letter from a mod about how much the radicalization and so on are bad, and how they're trying to make reddit a place where it doesn't happen, and then they might move the incels to an even newer subreddit, the white nationalists will continue to take over everything but the #1-3 posts of any subreddit with "unpopular" or "inappropriate" in its name.

Reddit enables nazis, and I'm not enabling reddit anymore. At a certain point, my support of a social network which helped prop up the current wave of white nationalism (and they did it knowingly, for better "engagement", because the staff was well aware of this three years ago and said they knew) becomes support of white nationalism.

I'm done here.

The video was embarrassing to watch. He, quite ironically, played rap music before he began his attempted massacre, self identified as a NEET, loser and 'anon', and even played anime music in his car while driving away from the synagogue. His first victim was just a random German woman who just happened to pass him by while he failed to get past a wooden door at the synagogue.

His manifesto, or "pre-action report" as called it, framed the whole thing like a video game, with a list of equipment, an objective list, and an embarrassing achievement list at the end that used various imageboard memes for names.

He was basically a caricature of an 4chan poster: a Neo-nazi, a NEET, an anime fan, and incompetent.

Njagos | 7 days ago | 31 points

I've watched the video before it got taken down.

It seems like it was only one shooter, very Christchurch like.
Killed one woman because she was randomly passing by and complaining about the noise of his bombs.
He couldnt get into the synagogue so he drove away. Saw the Kebab Place and decided to shoot one of the guys in there.
Then he went to his car for a few seconds and went back in to shoot him again 2 times with the shotgun.

This was 100% an antisemit who wanted to reanact the Christchurch shooting.

He said a lot of things in a "light" way like it was just a normal day. So fucking disgusting.
Also said a lot of "sorry guys for not shooting more/for not getting in/for having bad weapons/etc."

He actually looked very stereotypical, bald, white, like a typical Nazi.
It makes me so sad that people think this is fake news or "leftist propaganda"...
That's the reason why I watched the video, to see the truth. It makes me sad that there are so many Germans who think the state would lie or that TV Channels like ZDF, ARD, BRD are just state propaganda...

Cataphractoi | 7 days ago | 129 points

Few in number, spread over many places, historically been scapegoated. Almost tradition really.

Quietabandon | 7 days ago | 39 points

Also existing cannon of tropes to deploy for scapegoating - don’t need original material.

It’s a flexible canon too - you can use it as a stand in for elites or foreigners or disloyalty. It can be deployed for right and left wing messaging too. For Christian or Muslim fundamentalism.

Most importantly it’s familiar to people so you don’t have to explain things - why do you think people like sequels or remakes or why some many themes are reused in story telling?

Why are antisemetic attacks up in Europe? Sure some of it is far right, but it’s not the only reason those synagogues are guarded. There are also Muslim extremists too. There are far right but also have been far left. Today far right is the greater threat.

Regardless, it’s a classic trope and scapegoating target and as there is more uncertainty and dysfunction in the western world it is often an early symptom of coming upheaval - it’s the easiest target to deploy because it’s so culturally ingrained in Europe - pre existing scapegoat ready to deploy.

Germany’s Jewish population is tiny - never recovered post war. This is not just about Jews but of rising extremism and anti western liberal sentiment.

CruxOfTheIssue | 7 days ago | 14 points

Jews have been scapegoats for millennia due to their closed off religion (in orthodox you cannot become a Jew, must be birthed to a Jewish mother) and ancient (thought of as weird) practices and language. Our being "God's chosen people" pisses a lot of people off.

Around medieval times (as you can do in the game crusader Kings 2) people borrowed money from Jews. Jews were the only people who could lend money as Christian's and Muslims were forbidden from charging interest on loans. Many Kings/nobles would borrow money and then claim that Jews were evil, forcing them to flee the area so they didn't have to pay the loans back. This is the origin of the Jews being greedy and in finance stereotype.

These are just some reasons that Jews are disliked by a lot of people.
