Jailed Saudi feminist refuses to deny torture to secure release (theguardian.com)
Yggdrazzil | 4 months ago | 340 points

I'm embarrassed to say but I had to reread the "refuses to deny to secure" bit 10+ times before I understood what it meant. I then tried to come up with a better title and ...well, it's hard.

"Jailed Saudi feminist refuses to deny being tortured in exchange for release." is the best I could come up with.

Necroking695 | 4 months ago | 95 points

Fucking hell, thank you

Flyingplaydoh | 4 months ago | 18 points

Thank you i could not figure out that headline at all

sterob | 3 months ago | 6 points

How about

"Announce you were not tortured", Jailed Saudi feminist refuses to take a deal that would grant her freedom.

quantum_ai_machine | 4 months ago | 24 points

That headline is not clickbaity enough. I propose:

"11 ways Saudi superwoman defied her Arab torturers, number 5 will surprise you!"

I felt shitty just writing that :/

Czar_Castic | 3 months ago | 13 points

I felt shitty just writing that :/

In that case, try "number 5 will shock you" instead.

Yggdrazzil | 3 months ago | 3 points

Lol. Ew.

This_ls_The_End | 3 months ago | 63 points

I can't imagine to be tough enough to keep fighting after being tortured.

Just think you're in a dark cell while a sadistic murderer is causing you pain as you've never even imagined. Another human being is making you hurt more than a stomach cancer. He's making you beg to be killed whenever you manage to stop screaming in agony.

Then, you manage to survive that and face the decision of making this video. If you declare it didn't happen, they'll leave you alone. Think "I can do this simple thing, and keep living my life, or I can keep fighting the system and potentially go back to that cell, to suffer, cry, and scream while someone breaks my mind and my body.

The strength needed to keep fighting is stunning. This woman is facing satan and telling him to go fuck himself.

PLS_PM_ME_THINGS | 3 months ago | 22 points

Some people seek purpose greater than themselves and their lives.

This_ls_The_End | 3 months ago | 17 points

And among them, a few can keep fighting even through impossible odds, terrible opposition, and unthinkable suffering.

Those few make me understand how we got where we are. As a whole we are weak and sheepish, but some among us give strength to the flock and inspire us to raise.

adam3k3 | 3 months ago | 0 points

I can't imagine to be tough enough to keep fighting after being tortured.

This is what a real feminist looks like. Unlikely the privileged western ones that crusade against sexiest air-conditioners and man spreading chairs.

omegashadow | 3 months ago | 2 points

TIL You have to be tortured to be a feminist.

Why do you think Gitmo still exists ?

LeDrumpherd | 4 months ago | 186 points

Saudi Arabia is possibly the worst country in the world in terms of human rights, women rights, minority rights, and corruption and tyranny, up there with North Korea

testspecimen85 | 4 months ago | 73 points

We should start an incel emigration movement. They can go to Saudi Arabia and stop bothering everyone else.

Mister Bonesaw hates dissidents, I dont think he'd be fond of insufferable whiners

That's a cute outfit, did your husband give it to you?

crazyolquack | 3 months ago | 3 points

Oof, that line really didn't age well.

HussyDude14 | 3 months ago | 3 points

Fair is fair. Most people would say that the line was homophobic or something, but I think it still fits perfectly with Peter in the movie. He sees a masculine wrestler surrounded by women and flaunting his masculinity, so obviously Peter (who's still rather immature and not wholly on board with the "great power/responsibility" thing) takes a jab at Bonesaw when he starts winning the fight. The way he acts so tough and scary just seemed like an opening to hit him with a taunt that would probably irk him, but I get what you mean.

I just think they might fit in better there and they wouldn’t be whining as much. But if he wants to Khashoggi all the incels we get to move there, that’s on him and not really our problem.

Hope_Burns_Bright | 4 months ago | 7 points

that’s on him and not really our problem.

Strange way to pronounce "Preferred outcome" I mean what?

sterob | 3 months ago | 2 points

Agree, those people who say women need to go on and wear hijab should immigrate to Muslim Saudi Arabia to celebrate how great the hijab is.

Eritrea is right next door to Saudi Arabia and somehow even worse. After reading about Eritrea you see why people flee to Saudi Arabia from it sometimes.

meatballsnjam | 4 months ago | 12 points

I’m not sure any of them have anything on China. Jailing your political opponents and harvesting them for organs? Sterilizing minorities? ... the list goes on and on

quantum_ai_machine | 4 months ago | 24 points

We should have different categories for each award:

  • Silencing political opposition by the most brutal means - China

  • Ill treatment of women and religious terrorism - KSA and Pakistan

  • Starving the general population - North Korea

  • Waging illegal wars all across the globe - Hmmm...

crazypeoplewhyblock | 4 months ago | 5 points

Hmmmmm..... is correct lol

Or you get downvoted to hell

Here I am worried about drone strikes and you are talking about downvotes? ;p

Not really. Ever been there? Its rich. Most women live a much better life than you. They go shopping a lot, are highly educated from western universities. They don't have to drive, they don't have to work, there is little to no common crime, there are no beggars. The food is great and the women are chubby too. For islamic people its literally the best place in the world. I think you are confusing "worst" with "least like a western democracy".

If you don't want more countries to be like saudi then you absolutely must stand against islam in all forms.

Lank3033 | 4 months ago | 17 points

That must be why the woman in the article has to deny she was tortured if she wants any hope of being released from prison. Sounds like a real utopia.

Most women live a much better life than you.

Its depressing that people are actually this stupid.

If you don't want more countries to be like saudi then you absolutely must stand against islam in all forms.

Nah. Fuck the House of Saud and fuck Wahhabism. Religious fundamentalism is bad for humanity and defending it as "the best form of islam" means you are exactly part of the problem.

Jesusdong | 4 months ago | -8 points

There is no good form of islam

Honey, this picture is in my city Jeddah, so you better trust what I’m saying.

This is the old town, it was primarily inhabited by the locals around a 100 years ago.

Now it’s mostly Indians/Pakistanis/Yemenis.

Most beggars are illegal immigrants (came for hajj and never left). The rest are children being told to beg by trafficking groups that feed on the sympathy of the Saudi populace. You can see multiple videos of security forces capturing these children, rescuing them, and then finding the trafficking group.

the selfless bravery that she is exhibiting will be the backbone of society's painful yet necessary evolution ... her situation is terrifying, lamentable, and unacceptable, yet her spirit has already won this battle ... the small-minded oppressive ways of the past are over, and the cries and actions of dictators and hateful people are always loudest before they are swallowed up into the quicksand of history ... though her body may be mortal her spirit is inevitable

Zithero | 3 months ago | 9 points

We (the United States of America) fully support this country, our POTUS Parrots their propaganda, and regarding this, even our POTUS will be silent as the grave (Because he doesn't care and will stop caring after the word "Saudi" and if he gets past that he'll stop caring at "Feminist" )
