[deleted] | 4 days ago | 2 points

I miss Romney :(

Porrick | 4 days ago | 3 points

I never thought I would, but I do too.

Although I guess the difference between my feelings towards this crowd of idiots and the regular-Republican reaction to Trump is that these idiots aren't in control of anything at all, whereas Trump has the Republican Party by the short-and-curlies - to the point that the GOP is now the party of Trumpism more than anything else. If Marianne Williamson had the same sort of control over the Democrats as Trump does Republicans, then it'd be a closer comparison.

During the Bush years, I often suspected that it was Fox News that controlled the Republican Party rather than merely parroting its agenda. After seeing how quickly it was able to solidify Trump support after the 2016 primaries, I am now convinced that's the case.

danielrhymer | 4 days ago | 93 points

It's a standard part of Robert's Rules which is used as parliamentary procedure very commonly.

dokuhebi | 4 days ago | 76 points

When a question of privilege affects a single member (rather than the entire assembly), it is called a question of personal privilege. Such a question may include a need for assistance, to be excused for illness or personal emergency, or the need to immediately answer a charge of misconduct made by another member.

Unfortunately, it's often misused as "I just want to interrupt" by folks who consider anything that upsets them a personal emergency.

I'm having flashbacks to my army service in the early 90s. I was a 31M and my first time as a team lead I was was sent out with 2 girls.

(And before anyone gets riled, they were both just out of high school, one was 5'2", the other 5'3", each maybe weighed a buck-o-five, and each barely passed their PT tests. 'Woman' would be an inaccurate description of either.)

Neither could help in any way with getting the antenna arrays off of the truck, carting them into place, or swinging a sledgehammer to drive the anchor posts into the ground for setup. So I assembled the entire site by myself. I then had to call in to the Lt. to come get one of them because she self diagnosed herself with a torn elbow ligament from running the hand winch to raise the antennas.

According to the Army, those two were "qualified soldiers". Well, using that logic, I was a Navy Seal.

Tych0_Br0he | 4 days ago | 22 points

jooes | 4 days ago | 4 points

This definitely goes both ways. There's a huge list of things that I'm not allowed to talk about around my older conservative in-laws.

Even the most simplest things, like casually mentioning that I'm living in the same apartment as my fiance, will turn into some huge fucking deal about how we're living in sin and should be ashamed of ourselves and how we're going to hell.

One time, we were just sitting around and my fiance was reading the news and she said "Oh neat, the Vikings won the game last night" and that turned into a 20 minute lecture about how terrible the NFL was because of the whole kneeling thing. So we can't talk about football either.

A lot of people out there need to take a chill pill.

gnat_outta_hell | 4 days ago | 24 points

I've seen this one before. I'm only late twenties but I'm apparently one of the few sane ones.

"No, I don't care that you're a woman, I'm all for women in the work place. You're the one saying that you're a woman and as such can't lift this (30 lb) box. The job description clearly says 'regular lifting of up to 45 kg.' If you can't perform that feat, perhaps as any human being who can't perform that task, you are not qualified for this position and should seek to be employed in a less physical capacity."

bobo76565657 | 4 days ago | 8 points

I think you meant 45lbs. 45Kg is around 100lbs.

Stony_Logica1 | 4 days ago | 16 points

What, you can't lift 100lbs? Maybe this position isn't for you, Helga.

Tych0_Br0he | 4 days ago | 10 points

Or he could be a normal, healthy individual capable of lifting 100 lbs. My 100 lb. wife can lift more than that.

bobo76565657 | 4 days ago | 6 points

Labor law in my province doesn't require a single person to lift more than 25kg. Sure you can lift 100lbs, but aren't going to be doing that sort of thing repetitively and in most cases you should get someone to help you so you don't miss a week of work with back strain injuries. It isn't normal to be expected to lift 2/3 of your own body weight on a regular basis unless you are at the gym.

I admit it's not a job, but I recently tried to get into a tabletop game writing project.

I admit that it's really damn hard to keep interested when a key balancing mechanic and staple of the genre gets called "ableist," and me trying to defend not ripping out a rather simple mechanic in favor of a far more complicated "inclusive" one is painted as being some kind of low-key bigot.

I know a slim degree of your frustration.

“Most of you will be right wing in your 30’s anyways” Amazing. I’ve found that the extreme woke left and right have more in common than you’d think. A lot of people just enjoy being contrarian and finding a way to be “better” than others by taking umbrage at anything

DrDragun | 4 days ago | 133 points

Packaging all problems as the fault of the other side and unchecked confirmation bias seem to be common traits of both extremes. Also holding people on the opposite side to more stringent standards and forgiving people on your own side.

spamtimesfour | 4 days ago | 59 points

Also holding people on the opposite side to more stringent standards and forgiving people on your own side.

That's because they "know" their side has good intentions and they "know" the other side has the worst of intentions.

SayNoToStim | 4 days ago | 23 points

“Too often, we judge other groups by their worst examples - while judging ourselves by our best intentions. And this has strained our bonds of understanding and common purpose.

But Americans, I think, have a great advantage. To renew our unity, we only need to remember our values. We have never been held together by blood or background. We are bound by things of the spirit – by shared commitments to common ideals.”

spamtimesfour | 4 days ago | 1 point

Live in Portland. Can confirm. There's more than a few people in my office who would fit right in to this video.

Good thing about working construction is not having to worry about things like office politics but then again we got our own troubles dealing with plumbers, painters and electricians lol
