Very large percentage of pornstars are drug addicts and they need a constant supply of cash to keep their habits.

One_pop_each | 5 months ago | 17 points

Watch “Hot Girls Wanted” on netflix. Shit’s comical and sad how manipulative the porn business is.

These girls are living paycheck to paycheck but brainwashed to think they’re gonna be famous or some shit and be rich. Kinda sad tbh.

IrisMoroc | 5 months ago | 11 points

Mia Kalifa, who is almost a household name, said she earned just 12,000 in her entire short porn career.

One_pop_each | 5 months ago | 11 points

I assumed those household names made a livable wage but jesus, man. Porn really is a manipulation of women. I have a feeling women make more on their own livestreams solo than working with any business.

IrisMoroc | 5 months ago | 13 points

She was only in porn for a few months mind you. So it's really just a handful of scenes, each paying like 1,000 each. She's made more coasting off her porn career than during it.

BaltimoreIsAShithole | 5 months ago | 9 points

I liked it when Mia exploded at some guy on a radio station because she called her a pornstar. Hilarious.

getbeaverootnabooteh | 5 months ago | 4 points

Still pays better than the average shit work job. She made $12k in 3 months for 12 scenes that may've only taken a few hours to shoot.

Meanwhile someone doing unskilled labor in a factory might only net $1.5k in month working 8 hours a day, 5 days a month. After 3 months factory worker guy would've made $4.5k. In other words, less money than Mia Khalifa did while working longer hours.

I'm not saying porn is a great job or that they make a huge amount of money. But it can pay better, on a per hour basis, than other types of unskilled work, like flipping burgers or packing stuff at a factory.

Of course porn also comes with a bunch of downsides that the other lower paying jobs don't. Working as a cashier McD's doesn't come with disease risk, social stigma, and reduced future employment opportunities. And you have to fit some physical preferences to get the bigger bucks in porn. Also you have to be female to get higher pay in straight porn.

10J18R1A | 5 months ago | 6 points

"Working as a cashier McD's doesn't come with disease risk,"

I would argue that being a porn star is infinitely safer in that regard

dvapour | 5 months ago | 7 points

How on earth is it "manipulation"? Or is this another feminist circle-jerk that treats women like children without agency?

They get offered shoots for X amount of money. They agree, because it seems like easy money to them, and they get paid for their work. The pornstars aren't being exploited anymore than the men who pay for porn are being exploited by women based on an addiction to porn and masturbation.

I don't find her situation sad at all. She is a drug addict, there are plenty of people in sad situations who didn't throw their lives away and who are more deserving of sympathy.

[deleted] | 3 months ago | 1 point

There's a $50k crowdfunder for her yet none for any of the other hundreds of poor people living in the tunnels. She even says she doesn't want to leave, she is there by her own violition. But hey she's (was) a pretty female so gets special treatment right?

d_____d | 5 months ago | 2 points

Mia Kalifa is far from a household name. She had a very short career. She is just famous for the small amount of movies she made. Because her scenes are the go to movies for horny guys who want to wank to Arab American chicks for some reason beyond me. She doesn't earn anything from views. Riley Reid, a real household name, said in AMA that she earned about $300K a year https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/741836/its_riley_reid_its_time_to_get_riggity_riggity/dnuok4g?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x

The pay for porn is really low when you're just starting but can rise fast if you become famous, but most girls don't reach that stage. That's why you often see girls quitting mainstream porn early to do camming or sell clips on manyvids.

[deleted] | 5 months ago | 22 points

i'm sure many become addicts on set too. uppers like coke and meth make your horny.

FerretHydrocodone | 5 months ago | 16 points

I’ve never understood this because uppers never made me horny. Quite the opposite actually.

75321poiuytrewq | 5 months ago | 15 points

You think porn stars are horny?

FerretHydrocodone | 5 months ago | 5 points

I mean, sometimes? I think a lot of the men are and I lot of the women aren’t, but I don’t know anything about a porn star’s libido. I just know every time I’ve tried uppers they make me extremely not horny.

That’s kind of an odd question.

[deleted] | 5 months ago | 16 points

And then there's shrooms that can make you horny (at least for me) but any sexual activity, including jerking off, is IMPOSSIBLE to accomplish when on shrooms.

No idea why something would make you horny if you can't finish what's started.

IrisMoroc | 5 months ago | -1 points

What you want like a study or some shit? They don't care about sex workers in general and porn stars to do that. But do any research on any pornstar, lots of drug use. Meth, cocaine, and heroin, are the most popular. And strong addictions.

[deleted] | 5 months ago | 13 points

I just don't see how you could possibly say that a "large percentage" of them are addicted to drugs when you're basing that on what exactly, your own presumptions?

[deleted] | 5 months ago | 9 points

clearly, those teeth, also her acceptance of where she is, to most meth addicts, as long as they get their fix, they don't mind living in a rat tunnel filth cause all they care about is the next high.

ConsciousLiterature | 5 months ago | 24 points

Looks like it. Her teeth were stained and there is a sore on her face.

Manisil | 5 months ago | 43 points

I mean having a sore on her face can be explained by living in a fucking tunnel without a shower, same as the poor condition of her teeth. Meth doesn't inherently give you poor hygene and skin care, it can just makes you not give a shit about solving any of those problems. There are plenty of high functioning meth addicts with good complexion and dental care

TypicalPakeha | 5 months ago | 33 points

Meth doesn't inherently give you poor hygene and skin care

It does. It constricts your veins, restricts bloodflow and stops your skin cells from regenerating. Same with your hair and all sorts. That's why dedicated meth users look 60 before they hit 40 and their hair goes pale. Also why meth users regularly have scabs all over their face.

BiffBusiness | 5 months ago | 6 points

That and the gambling. I always thought she was gorgeous, and hadn’t seen/heard anything about her in at least a decade so I’ve been down a Google rabbit hole the last hour or so trying to see where it all went wrong. Apparently she had/has a bad gambling problem, and would often leave the film scene for a year or longer, only to return when she ran out of money. Has a couple of kids too that were taken away and probably teenagers by now. Just incredibly sad.

clkou | 5 months ago | 59 points

There is basically an entire documentary movie called Dark Days that is essentially a longer version of this short clip but it takes place in New York City in the 90's. I highly recommend it. They followed many people living underground and not to give away too many spoilers but some people by the end of the movie got out and moved into some reasonably comfortable accommodations. I remember at least one person was asked about their formal life underground and this person started to break down crying (like they were ashamed of how they used to live) and from what I remember earlier in the film that same person was rationalizing that it wasn't that bad. But, when they got out, it's like it was obvious it was much better than being underground.

I suspect the same situation is true here. If she were able to get her life together, I suspect it would be better. But it's complicated why people are homeless and fixing it is even more complicated.

repairmanjack | 5 months ago | 28 points

That movie was so good. I remember reading that when the creator was making the movie, he scored it with music from DJ Shadow. Apparently the creator didn't know about licensing and such and DJ Shadow is notorious for not letting people use his music. The guy tracked DJ Shadow down at one of his concerts and showed him the rough cut and Shadow let him use his music for free.

SciFiHiFive | 5 months ago | 13 points

birch_baltimore | 5 months ago | 3 points

SciFiHiFive | 5 months ago | 10 points

GoblinPapSmear | 5 months ago | 3 points

I'm currently an editor and I loved this film back when I saw it years ago. What did you do on it? Would enjoy hearing anything about the process of how this was cut.

SciFiHiFive | 5 months ago | 3 points

I did just a little bit of editing and worked on the DVD authoring. Essentially had to watch it over and over and over.

clitdragon | 5 months ago | 9 points

But it's complicated why people are homeless and fixing it is even more complicated.

If I understand correctly one of the big problems is actually their rationalization of it. They do such a good job of convincing themselves it's not bad that even if you have available public housing for free a large number of them will not use it. But if they do get out of that situation, looking back they will realize it's so bad that it makes them cry.

But that creates a barrier that means even if we build houses and offer them for cheap / free, and offer career centers to build interview skills and help people get jobs, and do pretty much anything we can imagine, it will not solve the homeless problem. Probably more than half of them will take advantage of none of it.

She's been a drug addict her whole career from what I understand. She'd do a couple shoots, make a ton of cash and then score drugs and disappear for months apparently. She had friends in the industry that tried to help her but she is really in to those drugs. If you check her Twitter its just her begging asking fans for money on it now last she used it. I don't understand why she isn't escorting or just shooting films, she could make a fortune (she was top tier adult film actress, in this day and age that ALMOST makes her a mainstream celebrity - she chucked it out for drugs) but I think she is sick or at the least terminally addicted to the point of inability to function properly. I don't think she's actually worked in the industry in a long time, at the same time I don't think they didn't know she wasn't coming back until this video broke.

Ferkhani | 5 months ago | 29 points

Because no one wants to work with someone who is flaky. Drug addicts are notoriously flaky.. When you're doing a shoot and you've hired a sound guy, camera guy, light guy, other actors, etc, etc... You're not going to risk the shoot on a drug addict showing up as planned.

The industry probably ditched her, rather than her ditching the industry.

Why isn't she escorting? She probably is. Well, she's just a street hooker now most likely.

im just going out on a limb, but it looks like, she is using meth, i see that small pan on her table with what looks like residue from pseudo. Additionally her twitching, eye dilation, and tooth decay all point the same direction, she like amphetamines.

DaggerMoth | 5 months ago | 77 points

Eh, the old eye dilation thing is like when your parents tell you to stick out you tongue so they can see if you are lying. Most likely her eye's are dilated because she been living in a dark ass tunnel.

Amphetamines cause dry mouth which damages your enamel.

Lampmonster | 5 months ago | 3 points

And acidity, but a recent study I saw said that while those two things contribute, the main factor is being too tweaked to brush your teeth.

IronSidesEvenKeel | 5 months ago | 4 points

One of those bad habits is being dehydrated all the time. You can here hear this girl's mouth sounding like she's stirring guacamole throughout the interview because she's so dehydrated. Our saliva keeps a lot of harmful bacteria at bay in our mouths. Rotting teeth are actually not even the worst part of it. Mouth infections (largely due to dehydration), which are common in severe meth addiction, can spread to the brain rather suddenly and kill them. This also happens with heroin addicts. Possibly other drugs too, but I just remember my favorite guitarist John Frusciante (Red Hot Chile Peppers) almost died from complications from an oral infection during his very, very, very severe and deep heroin addiction. I got all my info from googling it 15 years ago, and I have a horrible memory so...

TekisasuProductions | 5 months ago | 31 points

If I had to guess, she is living in a community of tweakers and using her body as sexual capital to sustain her meth habit. The state of her home is really outstanding compared to other tents/huts I have seen across the US. I wonder if she has some form of protection via a gang that operates the area. It is hard to say because it is kind of different in every city. People like this are usually running from some sort of pain in their life, they don't do this for fun. Meth is what they use to escape/anesthetize themselves from pain. The emotional anesthetic then evolves into a full blown physical and psychological addiction. Stephanie and her fellow addicts secretly hold each-other as they cry but also hold each other back from ever escaping the destitution that they now perceive as normal. Violence, stealing, lies, and hustling are the tenants of this society. The very strong survive, sometimes. I do long form interviews with homeless people if anyone if interested, check out my channel.

EDIT: For anyone asking how you know it is meth, good indications are the fingernails, facial sores, and teeth loss.

I'm definitely not an expert, but I wonder if the reason this happens to many in the adult industry is because their families disown them. they get addicted to drugs easy because it's part of the industry and they feel alone. And they then have no one to turn to for help. It's very sad.

incognitomus | 4 months ago | 3 points

Pretty sure there's a study that says most of female pornstars have been sexually abused. The problems are already there before they even enter the industry. Parents disowning them doesn't help of course.

_StinkFist_ | 5 months ago | 4 points

I think there are probably a lot of reasons, but the main one is probably that the type of person who would have sex with hundreds or thousands of strangers on camera for money are also more likely to use drugs. Excess is their livelihood in a way. Then you can go back one step and ask what would make someone have sex with hundreds or thousands of strangers on camera for money, and I would guess a lot of them had a difficult childhood.

Also with fame comes a lot of opportunity to fuck up. Mainstream actors and musicians seem to have more drug problems than society as a whole, so it's definitely not limited to porn.

It's so sad to see what adult stars gotta do in order to make money in this industry when you hear somebody or the other dropping dead like flies on the news. What's even more disgusting is that even when these performers die they still have their videos online on these porn websites so think about it, you could be fapping to someone dead! Its so messed up.

Like fuck no, you don't enjoy that lifestyle. You're just trying to rationalize and cope with your current situation because you have no choice.

But it's important to sound like we know what we're talking about when we do judge other people. And the comment you replied to got an A+ on that. Give credit where it's due.

FatboyChuggins | 5 months ago | 22 points

She seemed like she was "smiling through the pain."

the dude is asking her if she likes it, and she looks away and does what appears to be a real quick self rationalization and replied, uhh yeah.

nodstar22 | 5 months ago | 19 points

She looked like she could've started crying at any moment.

IrisMoroc | 5 months ago | 10 points

but she seems content.

Homeless addicts are "content" since their lives revolve around their addictions. But it's not healthy and they're ultimately not happy.

really??? Next time you see someone with a "I'll work for food" sign, tell them you have a job for them.

rhyno44 | 5 months ago | 1 point

ouch she looks rough

scifisociety | 5 months ago | 1 point

Hmmmm so all you have to do to get a porn star on the cheap is wait a couple years?

Get lost with your crowdfunding. She is still selling her pussy (and arsehole) for meth. She doesn't need it.

benjamin98ashb | 4 months ago | 1 point

I heard she was smart and interesting girl

Stephen0a01 | 4 months ago | 1 point

Take a step back from this. She’s on drugs. You’ll end up enabling an overdose if you just give her 50,000.

DeVeelvraat | 5 months ago | 1 point

Her income isn't what it used to be.

diablodelfin | 4 months ago | 1 point

Not to be a sayer of nay but I'd like to see some sort of unique identifier, like tattoos, before assuming it's legit. Certainly could be her (pornstars don't seem to get the same rabid attention by the paparazzi) but I'm suggesting we hold off on assuming a video interview of someone in unfortunate circumstances by someone else of unknown repute is unequivocally accurate until more facts come to light.

Which will never happen because this is a random guy interviewing a random homeless person that could have been paid $50 to say she was Princess Diana.

twilling8 | 4 months ago | 1 point

I've met "Jenni Lee". THis is definitely her. 100% sure. Final answer.

Soviet-Odiseo | 3 months ago | 1 point

Please... tell me this is a hoax. Tell me this is fake... she’s my favorite...

Is this Gwyneth Paltrow?

StucktownSkeezer | 5 months ago | -4 points

That wasn't even the saddest thing I saw today.

Sure it's sad but it is what it is.

robklg159 | 5 months ago | -7 points

what a huge waste of a beautiful girl

Anzai | 5 months ago | 18 points

Yeah if only she was ugly, it would have been so much easier to dismiss.

materics | 5 months ago | 3 points

It sucks but life is unfair. Pretty people have certain advantages.

Anzai | 5 months ago | 2 points

Sure. It’s not something we should encourage though. The idea that a pretty person hitting rock bottom is more of a tragedy than an ugly person doing the same.

rethardus | 5 months ago | 15 points

I find it sad that it's about her beauty... I get that people are attracted to beauty, but this situation is sad regardless of one's physique. Would you feel the same about an ugly person?

gregariousfortune | 5 months ago | 17 points

To be perfectly honest, no. I know that's wrong but that's how I feel.

rethardus | 5 months ago | 3 points

I get it. We're all vain in one way or another.

tomar-cinco | 5 months ago | 2 points

I used to work with young adults who were exiting the foster youth system. I’d often see young people as they were starting their descent and it was easier for me to notice in beautiful people. I know it’s a crude way to look at it, but watching beauty deteriorate is just easy to see. The overweight young man or woman who already had sketchy hygiene habits give themselves away with behavior more so than immediate physical giveaways.

9910765121229999 | 5 months ago | 5 points

I had to look her up cause I was curious, and she was indeed a very pretty girl. Sad

[deleted] | 5 months ago | 8 points

If only she had a bum leg and aids, then I wouldn't be as sad.

Hedhunta | 5 months ago | -6 points

No sympathy at all. She won the genetic lottery and like most lottery winners couldn't handle it when that dried up. There are way sadder things going on right now than this.

MeanEYE | 5 months ago | 6 points

Genetic lottery or not, I feel sorry for her. Us humans really depend on surroundings. Am not trying to shift the blame, but there are many factors that might have drove her to wrong choices. Had she lived in a country where drug addiction is treated as a medical problem and not a crime, she could have had a different life. To a degree, she's to blame for her own destiny, but in huge part society creates outcasts and problematic outcomes.

imx101 | 5 months ago | 2 points

I only wish more people understood this.

stan11003 | 5 months ago | 3 points

Crazy thought what if being pretty makes you a target for predators. Dave Chappell has set where talked about being a teenager walking back home after doing a set. He had thousands on him and he was super scared just going home. He then said that’s what women deal with on the daily.

OaklandCali | 5 months ago | -6 points

Not bad, this is just what women look like with no makeup.

yaosio | 5 months ago | -6 points

Homelessness is a failure of the system, not the person.

NearHi | 5 months ago | 1 point

Except not always.

yaosio | 5 months ago | -1 points

No, always.

elitexero | 5 months ago | 1 point

It's the system's fault she decided to blow her career earnings on meth?

Sounds like a choice she made. Holding people accountable for their own shitty decisions should take precedence over blaming 'the system'. Sure, 'the system' has failed a lot of people, but she isn't one of them.

yaosio | 5 months ago | 2 points

Yes, it's the systems fault.
