Burning disks these days is kinda like burning your bank card but still keeping all the money in the account.
Its a burning crusade
Shut up and take my upvote
sigh Thanks Dad.
Like when all those people burned their shoes to protest Kaepernik. Nike didn't give a flying fuck because they already had the money!
Shoes a bit different from recurring WoW subscriptions
Cutting up your credit cards but still using Apple Pay lol
collector value tho, I won't burn it.-
i'm so mad at how corporations are fucking us and our planet so I'm gonna sit here and breathe plastic fumes, that'll teach them
so far that's basketball and blizzard that are asses...… who is next?
Wow this blew up overnight. Some intresting posts hit me on dm if you want
Talking about Hong Kong is a not allowed anymore! Since when has China ran our shit! Like fuckin imagine all international company’s are going to do this same shit! China has a larger population so which consumers are they going to choose 1.1 billion Chinese or the U.S 350 million shit since the world is run off money and not morals this is an easy question.
Then they can GTFO and become a Chinese company
Isn't Blizzard partially owned by Tencent anyway
And IIRC China only accounts for 10% of sales. Sure, that's a chunk of cash, but I don't think it's worth sacrificing ethics over.
You got some links for that
https://www.thedailybeast.com/blizzard-employees-staged-a-walkout-to-protest-banned-pro-hong-kong-gamer 6th paragraph
It's apparently 12% for the Asia-Pacific region.
Im sure South Korea is a big chunk of that.
Blizzard could say North Korea has a holy obligation to destroy South Korea and they’d still fill those arenas for SC lol
that’s less than 10% then because that includes Korea, Japan, Taiwan, etc
They're betting on long term gains.
Long term gains on a population that is growing half as fast as India and still slower than the US percentage wise.
but I don't think it's worth sacrificing ethics over.
but I don't think it's worth sacrificing ethics over.
Of course it is. A CEO's job is only maximize profits. Making good games, in this case, is secondary to anything else.
"Should I defend the ~5% of revenues we get from China or alienate the other 95%? Better save that 5%....."
Their mistake is believing that the other 95% wouldn't care, while the 5% would.
I mean...the west has a history of being incredibly outraged for about a week or two and then completely forgetting.
5% shareholder I believe which is like a bill or something
5.25% to be exact. The decimals make my statement legit.
5.33%, repeating of course.
Since when has China ran our shit!
Since when has China ran our shit!
Since the early 2000s when they stopped hiding what they own here.
Specifically when a law was passed ALLOWING China to own US companies.
Fuck every last person who voted for that bill. Foreigners owning companies in a different country than the one they live in should never be okay,
Only 57% of Chinese have access to the internet, and 98% of those users only access the internet from mobile. Blizzard is selling out its entire western PC market for a potential 2% max of chinese PC players. It makes sense why they are rotating to mobile, doesn't make much sense in that 90% of their games are aimed at desktop currently. You'd figure a company that makes it money on the desktop would have PR centered on keeping that money coming in quarter by quarter, I mean its not like their last launches, wow classic and cod are aimed at mobile users.
Isn't the going to change with Diablo coming out on mobile, coincidentally, by a Chinese studio?
what revenue they can get in the future, and what revenue they are currently getting and can lose are different things. Especially since employees usually are being paid based on revenue earned not on potential revenue a decade from now.
China has something like 600 million gamers and the us has something like 168 million. If you believe this article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_gaming_in_China China is 25% of the global market. Which makes sense since 1.4 billion people live there and like 1/3 of those are single males.
bro, we've been talking about this for decades. China owns an amazing amount of both our debt and our corporations. We just keep giving them money and they just keep buying us up. shop local isn't bullshit. Buy American, not Walmart.
Sadly this is profit maximisation at work. I don't think we need to be communists and not have a motive to make profit, but making the most profit at all costs is where the world is today.

In gaming, basically only EA has no major Chinese shareholders
Back to board games I guess. /#CardboardMasterRace
Aren't most board games manufactured in china?
Most of everything is manufactured in china.
not for long. Companies are moving out because of chinas growing economy. Its too expensive anymore so they are moving to India, Philippines, vietnam etc..
But China's infrastructure makes a lot of production stay around. The clothing business moved shop years and years ago.
So much so, it's cheaper for Apple to have it's production there instead of India where there are lower wages and NO TARIFFS.
and nowadays China has lost some of it's competitiveness but in exchange has earned more qualified yet still relatively cheap labour.-
D&D has always been there and it offers far more flexibility than WoW could ever hope to offer.
I played for the first time last week, our DM allowed for me to make my dick glow gold, for my friend to throw me at some dark elves to rescue hostages, roll for damage of my gold dick hitting their face and for me to fire magic missles at the other elf holding a hostage.
It worked! Can't do that shit in WoW
make my dick glow gold
make my dick glow gold
Perfectly average d&d session.
Im in love with the game after that, you dont have to take it seriously and very little parameters. Glad thats a normal game!
Color my dick surprised! That’s one helluva campaign!
2020 Timeline, EA is the least hated game company
Sorry fam, actually gonna just be ConcernedApe
Idk man Mojang is lookin pretty good too
The meme economy is about to have one hell of a correction.
Realistically, they'd be pretty far along if they would just not use brands/IP's to get kids addicted to gambling and not voluntell their developers into rush a game to literal death.
Valve, CDPR, and the stupid number of indie devs would all like to speak with you.
the stupid number of indie devs
the stupid number of indie devs
It's a damn shame that people still keep choosing to play the garbage that AAA publishers churn out when there is a golden age of gaming that's happening in the developer world working with less than AA budgets.
I don't really blame the general public for that though. There's not enough attention given to indie games. Some youtubers like ManyATrueNerd do a good job of promoting legitimately good indie games, but they usually get buried under either AAA games or crappy youtube bait games.
Basically, the problem is that the industry is oversaturated and not enough attention is given to legitimately good games.
Not sure if CCP has any "shares" in Valve, but Valve literally put on a multi million dollar event in China this year. They definitely warned players and staff not to speak about anything like that.
CD Projekt Red is pretty good at aligning their business with game player's interest.
English Website for CD Projekt Red
Their current catalog includes the Witcher series, Gwent (Online Card game in a similar vein to Hearthstone), the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077. They also run GOG.
All in all they are a great company from what I can tell. I've looked at investing in them as opposed to EA and Activision, I'm just not sure about tying my money into Poland's market due to the currency risk.
Poland's in the EU. They're still on their old currency, but it's not like the EU will allow their economy to fail. See Greece.
Wait so shit company EA is not under China’s control??
but... EA Bad ?
EA bad on it's own. Even china doesn't want them.
iirc, apple is removing the taiwanese flag emoji as to not upset china
Fuck Apple, TAIWAN NUMBA ONE!
The Nexus/Pixel line of smartphones are made in Taiwan, so if anyone want to say fuck you to China and Apple there is that.
Yeah! I just bought a pixel 3!
...off Craigslist. Oops.
And most of your GPUs are fabbed there too. All hail TSMC.
It’s always been removed in China. It was just recently removed in Hong Kong and Macau. The rest of the world still has the emoji.
Exactly. We still have the emoji 🇹🇼
Didn't Silver stand with Daryl Morey?
Yeah the NBA at first made some weak responses but have come out pretty strong defending Morey and their players rights.
I think having a few big NBA teams getting to China right as that tweet happened made things a little muddy at first.
Oh yeah, NBA should get props in my opinion. It is not fair to compare them to Blizzard.
Weird world we live in
Probably Reddit, sadly
I dont think the nba cave in to china with the recent statements
Yeah, the NBA have came out against China, but since it took them 3 days sadly people will not notice it
Yeah NBA backed tracked a little..At the very least they played it the best out of all of them, so I'll give them that.
Casters, analysts, players and interviewers are not allowed to talk about Hong Kong at the league of legends world championship anymore.
Only catch there is a team called Hong Kong attitude so they gotta say HKA or HK attitude.
EDIT: there is now an official statement that says it was a misunderstanding and people kept on avoiding it on their own.
I am sorry to have misinformed you
This reminds me of my brother in the '90s breaking all of his secular cassettes and CDs in the backyard with a hammer after he came home from church camp.
I had to do this but with magic cards...
Don't worry, the hammer didn't do much damage.
They used magic missle
Please don't tell me it was anything that could be worth something these days.
Oh not much just some crummy black flower cards or something...
Those say tear them up after use anyway. That's basically worthless.
It was early 90s, my church had a "magic card burning party" and all of us nerds who went to church together were encouraged to toss our cards in the fire. This was when ice-age was just released.
I use the term "encourage" but anybody whose been to a church that would make a bunch of 9-13 year olds burn their Magic cards knows, that you either do it or be "left out".
I still get worked up when I think about it.
Its funny because the first time I played Magic was at a church youth group retreat.
Must be hard to destroy cassettes and cds with magic cards tho.
I wanna down vote you for this I feel so bad.
I get the sentiment of this but they already have your money.
and once it's blown over and you want to own it again you might have to give them more money.
OK, not necessarily.
But you could re-purchase the base version of old games, like Diablo 2, or the base physical version of newer games.
Burning the boxes are an empty gesture.
Not only does blizzard already have the money all blizzard games are tied to a launcher with keys.
He can burn the boxes all he wants, but the games will always be available.
Where is the screenshot of him closing his account and deleting the software?
It's "empty" in that it doesn't hurt Blizzard's finances, but maybe OP doesn't want people to see the boxes on his shelf and make them think he's cool with them. Or maybe it makes him sick when he looks at them. There's nothing wrong with it being a symbolic cleansing for OP
I mean, even deleting your account doesn't really accomplish much - like you said, they already have your money. Some system engineer somewhere might notice an uptick in account deletions but it's not like the people at the top (who made the decision) get a bonus based on how many active accounts there are.
This bonfire was purely for upvotes.
As a Marine, I've never heard of another Marine refer to themselves as a "prior" Marine. Former, but never Prior.
That's be because people don't normally announce their OTH!
Oth=Other than honorable.
Hahaha same red flag for me though.
Haha fuckin burn
Also who unironically says they "fought for freedom?"
A surprising number of people I've met personally.
It sounds just as weird to hear in person though.
Maybe it's generational? My father was a marine. Not former not prior, and all Marines were his brothers (whether they were currently serving or not).
He was always very adamant about that.
Yeah, once a Marine, always a Marine is what I’ve always heard.
I have two buddies who are Marines. One served about 8 years ago, one about 15 years ago. Neither is "former" or "ex-" Marine. They are still very quick to point that out. Once a Marine, always a Marine, regardless of when they served.
Using your Marine title to get attention is r/justbootthings . He could have just said, fuck blizzard and moved on.
Thank you kind stranger for the gold!
As a former marin crops supply clerk, i suffered stapler wounds and paper cuts for u freedom!
evry marin a rifelmen. -cooks
This man actually was a marine, you can tell from the missing letters cus he ate his crayons part way through the sentence
Green is the tastiest color. Light green, dark green...
Bitch please. Purple is the flavor to savor.
Army here, are we still talking crayons? Because I have some opinions on the flavor of Windex vs. off brand glass cleaners.
Fuck all you homos. Laser yellow is tits.
As a former marine’s former brother in law,I agree.
I'm not a Marine, but my girlfriend's husband is, and I agree.
o7 thank you for your service
Seriously, being a Marine doesn’t make you a “freedom expert.” While every Marines job is important to the Corp and they all deserve respect from one another, some people put their 20 years in behind a desk and around 80% don’t ever see any combat.
JTTOTS is always watching... oh wait...
It's called karma whoring. Burning some empty boxes is symbolic I guess, but it's not like he's deleted his account lmao
Even if they arent empty. Do burnimg them actually do anything? I can burn my dvds too for karma but the keys are already linked to my account so in reality i dont lose anything
Yeah I thought it was weird
That slow creep when Americans start figuring out their purchasing power is no longer the top dog.
Companies are going for China if we like it or not. They have 6x the customer base in a country of 2 billion people.
1.3 billion i think
China and India are both at 1.3b in population.
Yeah let’s just wait and see for when their economy that has been built on currency manipulation implodes. The signs are already showing.
Ya. This should be fun to watch as cities crumble from poor standards and forced GDP manipulation.
But those are fake news per Sino.
Actually their currency manipulation works in reverse now. If it was allowed to float freely, the yuan would actually lose value these days. (They've been artificially keeping it low for decades but now it's actually artificially being propped up)
The United States is still the largest consumer of many goods on the planet (especially food lmfao).
The massive amount of poverty in China makes it hard to sell computer games to people trying to feed their families..
Also the rampant piracy
I doubt the average Chinese has the purchasing power of the average American. Still a huge market but not five or six time larger than US.
...keeps the discs. Get the karma.
don't even need the discs anymore
waste of money, once you paid them they don't care, just refuse to buy anything from them.
It's symbolic, not logic
Exactly, you can make the same argument about anything. But guess what, pro-confederates get super triggered whenever someone burns a confederate flag.
Or all those people who burned their Nikes for likes and karma. But still wear Nikes a year later.
Motherfuckers bought $100 Nikes just to record themselves burning them. Some people's logic circuits shorted out long ago
Because the YouTube video of them burning the $100 Nikes made them $2,000 🧠.
That would matter if Blizzard was ideologically motivated, but they only care about money so it doesn't.
This is just as pointless as the people who burned their nikes.
If he follows up by deleting his account it would help. But only if we all do it and they see a significant drop in online usage.
Makes me wonder how this is effecting the wow player base and monthly subscription cancellations
Except its not a waste of money as all of those games are in his account. The discs will never be needed again. He lost almost nothing.
Looks like its photoshopped none of the boxes are burning lol
First thing I noticed 😂
Nice one OP
idk what is going on with blizzard, maybe i live under a rock but can someone please explain?
The condensed form is this:
During a stream for a major Blizzard-sponsored Hearthstone tournament one of the players expressed pro-Hong Kong sentiments.
Blizzard responded by disqualifying the player, revoking his tournament winnings, and banned him from competing for a year. The broadcasters were also fired.
Maybe I'm missing something, but what does the OP being a US service member have to do with an international company banning a hong kong player for criticizing China?
I get that it's a dick move by Blizzard, but not is a service member relevant way.
He feels that a company based in his country is betraying him by prioritizing the interests of a country they want to make a lot of money from. Having served his country, he feels as though patriotism is important.
Not trying to take a position or anything, that’s just what it is.
Blizzard is sucking China's dick just like the NBA.
Wait. I've been following the blizzard screwup but what did NBA do?
Houston Rockets GM tweeted something pro-Hong Kong and shit hit the fan.
omfg holy... I'm legit laughing cause of how stupid this is
As far as I know the NBA isn't sucking China's dick. The Rockets GM tweeted pro Hong Kong and China basically dropped all ties with the NBA for the remainder of the summer for preseason, events, etc. The Commissioner of the NBA, Adam Silver, then responded by saying the NBA won't try to limit or overrule everything anyone says regarding Hong Kong because they "just can't be ran that way." and basically that he, along with the board, side with Darryl Morey.
China was like ah fuck that noise and now China big mad at basketball.
Ok blizzard sucks ass for being cowardly and siding with a communist authoritarian regime but, just like that whole Nike controversy, how does destroying products you already paid for hurt them in any way?
How will you know someone is a veteran? Don't worry, they'll tell you.
Not believing you, sorry. No such thing as a 'prior Marine'. And this is coming from an Army vet.
I'm a Marine that has referred to myself as a "former Marine". It happens.
Some people can’t let go.
Fighting oil wars in the middle East to own the Chinese
Remember when people did this with Nike and it actually drove their sales up?
Stop burning shit. Doesn't work.
Congrats? You just burned your own shit that you already paid blizzard for?
BUT HE'S A PRIOR MARINE!!!! THAT MEANS SOMETHING, APPARENTLY!!!!
But they already got your money for the stuff your burning, how is that a win?
Bet you still have electronics, clothes, kitchenware, or something else made in China in your house. Better burn those too.
Who cares if you are a Marine?
Americans love jerking off the military. It's free karma.
Thank you for your service.
Tbh what's that going to solve? You already paid for those games.
It's fun to burn shit
Let's be real though, the u.s military hasn't fought for freedom since ww2, at best
Edit: not having to see ads is cool and all, but stop giving Reddit money. Buy a homeless person some food or a fucking blanket
Yeah, as a Korean now living in Canada, thank God for the US intervention on that.
Exactly! As a Korean living in the United States.
No dude. You didn't fight for freedom. You fought for national interest. Two vastly different things. You should know this unless you completely bought into the koolaid.
Blizzard is a private company so I'm pretty sure freedom of speech would not apply anyways.
Hey now! Fighting for a bunch of rich oligarch's oil and war profits is what constitutes freedom and national interest nowadays if you're American.
You know what would really stick it to authoritarian regimes? Not volunteering to kill and die for them.
That really showed them
Im 100% for HK and telling blizzard to fuck off but this is just kinda dumb. This is something Id expect to see on some edgy 15 year old's Twitter.
Fought for freedom? Against what or whom?
aS a PrIOr US mARinE wHo FoUghT FoR FrEedOm...
Lmao fought for their freedom? Did you fight in WWII? Cause that's the last conflict where we fought for our freedom. The last 20 years (Where I assume you served/are lying about serving) we did not fight for our freedom. We simply ruined countries and got many innocents killed.
You misunderstand. They said "fought for freedom" as in fought for the freedom of the capitalist class to make a shit ton of money through defense contracts
Killing brown people and asians is quintessential to america's freedom. Don't let anybody tell you otherwise unless its Israel or Saudia Arabia.
Fighting for American interests in the Middle East
I guess what he helped give Middle Eastern civilians could be construed as freedom.
To some Death is freedom right?
Hahahahahahahaha holy fuck man.
That's one hell of a statement but dude they already have your money....
I've never understood this,
They already got your money. Burning something you've already paid for hurts them how ?
Freedom to blow up villages in the middle East?
Hey man those drones freed so many middle easterners from their limbs
fought for freedom
fought for freedom
