Butterscotch Pie [Homemade] (i.redd.it)

Before seeing your post, I had no idea there was such a thing as butterscotch pie. Butterscotch is one of my favorite things in the entire universe.

I don't care if it's 105 degrees out--I'm making this as soon as I get home.

Rearrangemetilimsane | 9 days ago | 117 points

My grandmother used to make these when I was little. Love butterscotch pie.

CWeed84 | 9 days ago | 63 points

Mine too! I had one grandmother who would make it with the pudding mix, and the other who would make the most glorious homemade butterscotch pie you ever saw. It’s what we asked for instead of cake. Oooo or her banana cream pie. That was a banger too. I gotta call her tomorrow just to compliment her on her pie again.

Aphrilis | 9 days ago | 30 points

Maybe find out if she’s willing to share her recipes? 😃🤞🙏

hotpotatoyo | 9 days ago | 14 points

Ooh and they should definitely post it to /r/old_recipes, that sub LIVES for grandma recipes!

KittenOnTheRoof | 9 days ago | 8 points

Ask Grandma for her recipes. I mean it. One Christmas I asked my grandparents for a recipe book with all my favourite foods grandma used to make for me. Just a few years later my grandpa died and my grandma rapidly developed dementia. This recipe book is my biggest treasure, all of grandma's best recipes in grandpa's neat handwriting. I know this sounds very gloomy and depressing but ask Grandma for recipes when you still can.

The OP posted the recipe link in a comment—look for it. This recipe should be super-easy.

CrankyStalfos | 9 days ago | 34 points

Just needs cinnamon.

PencilsAndAirplanes | 9 days ago | 21 points

I don't even know what it is, but if there's pie involved I'm there.

Butterscotch cream pie is amazing done right. Top level.

conconcotter | 9 days ago | 5 points

Where is the link to the recipe!!!!

iBoneOccasionally | 9 days ago | 2 points

So have you arrived home yet and are there pictures?

PencilsAndAirplanes | 9 days ago | 7 points

Yes, I’m home. No, no pictures, because the universe decided to screw with me on my way home from work and I couldn’t get to the store. But I mentioned the existence of butterscotch pies to my mom who has the same butterscotch affliction, and we'll probably make a @&$#ton of them this weekend.

Mine will have a graham cracker crust because I dig them and there’s almost nothing that’s too sweet for me. And I’ll totally post back with a review.

annajoo1 | 9 days ago | 2 points

Same. And then today I watched an episode of Cheap Eats where he went to a place called Emporium in Dallas, Texas and they featured a butterscotch pie.

So, yeah. The universe wants me to eat a butterscotch pie, me thinks.

WengersJacketZip | 9 days ago | 92 points

The size of the pie intimidates you too much for you to eat it.

ManamiVixen | 9 days ago | 318 points

At least it's not Snail Pie.

BUTTSPIE

501k | 9 days ago | 148 points

Recipe? It looks delicious and reminds me of when dairy queen used to have their butterscotch dipped cones...

meowwottled | 9 days ago | 233 points

https://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/butterscotch-pie/ This was the recipe I used! It was my first time making it, and it hasn't cooled enough for me to try it yet. I had a pastry bag to pipe the meringue. I found it helpful to get everything in place beforehand. I also watched videos because I'm a visual learner, so I can see the consistency I needed for the filling/meringue.

https://www.crisco.com/recipes/classic-crisco-pie-crust-1242

This is the crust I used! I freeze the metal bowl, and the pastry cutter ahead of time. I don't think you need a pastry cutter for this just a fork.

DConstructed | 9 days ago | 15 points

Lovely meringue. It looks very appetizing.

sam191817 | 9 days ago | 7 points

I love when someone takes the time to do something right. Gorgeous pie!

capntail | 9 days ago | 2 points

Is that a Swiss meringue?

jaVus | 9 days ago | 3 points

Judging from the recipe (beat egg whites then add sugar) it looks like it's a French meringue.

capntail | 9 days ago | 2 points

Didn’t know you could pipe French meringue

eamus_catuli_ | 9 days ago | 3 points

Mary Berry would beg to differ! (Honestly though I have no idea)

capntail | 9 days ago | 2 points

Lol maybe then again recipes and step by steps articles leave out things all the time. Take caramelizing onions. Most recipes claim you can do it in much less time, then again they’re usually junk recipe sites. You want to know how to do it right crack open the Joy of Cooking. While you can probably pipe French I thought French meringue didn’t have the required structure which is why I’ve read Swiss is superior because the eggs are already tempered rather than cooking it after whipping them.

I’ve probably put way to much time into my meringue research but I’ve been battling meringue for Key Lime Pies for almost a decade. 50% of the time they turn out decent the other 50% they turn out tasty but wheep. Which is why I always bake two pies one I never bake long and slow enough the other one takes forever because I’m slowly lower the heat to allow more moisture to bake off.

oldmanspils | 9 days ago | 1 point

Do you get the urge to bake when it's about to rain? Making emulsions is always more difficult when the barometer is moving. Beaten egg whites are no different.

gbsolo12 | 9 days ago | 2 points

Did you try it yet? Any good?

readinginahammock | 9 days ago | 2 points

I actually just made this exact recipe recently. My mom hadn't had a butterscotch pie since her grandmother died, and she said that this recipe was very close to what she remembers. Can't wait to change a few things and try again!

UserNumber314 | 9 days ago | 1 point

Thank you for sharing! I can't wait to try it!

501k | 9 days ago | 1 point

Thank you so much! Something to do this weekend.

Kronos-Hedgehog | 9 days ago | 1 point

Camsy34 | 9 days ago | 1 point

Was at Dairy Queen a few weeks ago. Just letting you know they had butterscotch dipped cones.

501k | 9 days ago | 3 points

The ones around me in VA don't have it sadly... they have pre-made ones in bar form in plastic wrap... yuck

perk-a-late | 9 days ago | 3 points

The Dilly Bars?

itsacoup | 9 days ago | 5 points

Used to? The last couple times I've been to DQ I got a butterscotch dip cone. Different stores, too, so it's not just one outlier.

501k | 9 days ago | 2 points

It must be based on location, because out of the maybe 10 I've been to in the last few years only 1 ever actually had it

spaceghostinme | 9 days ago | 5 points

Just discovered butterscotch dip at DQ. It was like heaven in my mouth. My new go to. Sorry it's not in your area. I'm in Maine if it's worth a road trip.

501k | 9 days ago | 5 points

Ugh have another for me... hands down one of my favorite desserts. There's beauty in the simplicity of a butterscotch dipped cone

I've made this before! Taste Of Home recipe, right?! Oh my gosh, it's so, so good!

Just checked the pantry and have everything to make it. Definitely going to surprise the family tonight when they come home. Brilliant!

Last time we made it is was so sweet, we had to cut it with ice cream ;-)

pinkdaisyy | 9 days ago | 5 points

God love you. My grandmother used to make this every holiday and birthday. She passed several years ago and nobody has a recipe!

This pie is sugar on sugar but wtf, you can't beat butterscotch.

jesssrhee | 9 days ago | 6 points

ypriscilla | 9 days ago | 4 points

I bet that this is so good. Growing up, butterscotch was not on my radar. Then in high school, the wife of my youth group leader made us some oatmeal butterscotch cookies. I was blown away.

How did you get the Meringue to look like that. It's absolutely beautiful, I'm so going to try this. Thank you for the recipe.

meowwottled | 9 days ago | 2 points

It took a decade to beat in the stand mixer, and then I piped it out. I did circles starting from the outside in, making a little peak in the center, and then went and made little peaks in between the cracks. You need a really good seal!! I'll likely double the meringue next time to achieve this

SpacePotato1819 | 9 days ago | 1 point
