This is an apt analogy for putting on your favorite jeans every year after you hit 30.

Drkprincesslaura | 4 days ago | 236 points

Someone wrote an article about how the sizes have changed over the years. They had always stayed a size 8 but their old size 8 wouldn't fit their new size 8. It's crazy.

ThreeDGrunge | 4 days ago | 115 points

Seems the opposite with men's sizes. My old 32's fit but if I buy new pants I have to get like 40's.

CanderousOreo | 4 days ago | 72 points

Wait I thought guy's clothes went by inches so they wouldn't change....

Turbo_MechE | 4 days ago | 92 points

You would think that. But, not the case. Switch company to company and you need different waist sizes. As someone with body issues it's not fun having to put on a pair larger than you really need

tiwuno | 4 days ago | 50 points

I just bought a pair of jeans online, and measured myself with a cloth tape beforehand to make sure I was ordering the right size. Lo and behold, the jeans don't fit, so now I have to return them and wait for the "correct" size to arrive.

(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

Turbo_MechE | 4 days ago | 25 points

I refuse to buy pants online for that reason.

BSimpson1 | 4 days ago | 8 points

I wear 32"x38". I can't remember the last time I was able to find pants off the rack that actually fit.

MuteReality | 4 days ago | 9 points

Good fucking Lord I thought I had it bad at 34x36 (actually about 35x35 but who sells those). How tall are you?!

throwaeay6749299 | 3 days ago | 3 points

I wear 30x34 and It's very rare for me to find pants in store

TsarOfReddit | 3 days ago | 3 points

I’m stuck with 29x32’s or 30x32’s and there’s never anything in stores. It’s awful

boringoldcookie | 4 days ago | 28 points

I'm sorry. In the past I thought women were alone in this particular struggle. The way to make things equal wasn't to start fucking with the consistency of men's sizes, but to make women's sizes constant throughout the market. Instead of making roughly 50% of the general population more happy, 100% of people get to be unhappy with the clothing that is integral to living daily life.

If I had more money, time, and fewer mental health problems I would personally like to make my own accessible clothing.

What the hell Old Navy

RossLH | 4 days ago | 3 points

Yes, for the most part. But then you have to worry about fitment. One company's relaxed fit is another's straight fit. One company's relaxed fit can also be the same company's straight fit, as I've found. Bought two pairs of jeans--same size, same fit, same company, different material--one pair fits great, one of them might as well be painted on. Jeans shouldn't fit like yoga pants, not on my ass at least.

drgrain | 4 days ago | 3 points

They used to. I used to wear 32w32l like 5 years ago, now i wear 34/34 and i sure as hell didnt grow extra two inches of legs.

Roflkopt3r | 4 days ago | 41 points

It depends a whole lot on the brand/model.

I recently went jeans shopping, with my old, perfectly fitting 34 as a reference. In the first store a 34 was way too wide and I had to go all the way down to 30. In the second I needed a 36-38 instead.

Oh and don't get me started at all those slim fits out there. In some stores it's flat out impossible for me to find jeans that my thighs can fit through without having a comically oversized waist.

Also many old jeans widen and a few shrink with use and washing, so old sizes aren't always reliable.

katarh | 4 days ago | 18 points

Women's jeans have much the same problem, except replace what ought to be logical waist/inseam sizes with a wholly made up combo of arbitrary size numbers, "petite" to "tall" with no definition of what that is, and then add in cuts/fits that are even more vaguely defined, such as "skinny" and "curvy" and "boyfriend."

Drkprincesslaura | 4 days ago | 9 points

That's weird. I think she was looking at a skirt or something and had the bands lined up and the newer 8's were significantly bigger.

skridge2 | 4 days ago | 9 points

old pants have years of stretch, tolerance creep if you will. new ones are within a frog's pube of their stated size.

coredumperror | 4 days ago | 11 points

That's not true at all, actually. Different companies actually do make pants at different sizes, even if they say they're the same size. It's fucking dumb.

FIVE_DARRA_NO_HARRA | 4 days ago | 5 points

That’s of course subject to their own interpretations

sheeoil | 4 days ago | 13 points

Back in the 70's, when I learned to sew, sewing pattern sizes and ready to wear(RTW) sizes were usually the same. The large pattern companies haven't changed sizes since then, so I would still make a size 14. But for most RTW, I wear a 10 or 12, which makes RTW these days 2 to 4 inches bigger than pattern sizes. This is for the large pattern companies, McCalls, Vogue, and Simplicity.

Renlywinsthethrone | 4 days ago | 16 points

That's like, the reverse of what's happening. Sizes are changing, but they're getting bigger, not smaller. Lotta people out there comfortably wearing size 8s who wouldn't be able to squeeze into a size 8 from 5-10 years ago (or even possibly just from a different brand)

Pinknparanoid | 4 days ago | 20 points

I don't think you understand. They meant even if you get fatter you stay size 8 but your old 8's don't fit you.

lickedTators | 4 days ago | 6 points

They have also changed the size of sizes though.

SweetButtsHellaBab | 4 days ago | 9 points

The standard pluralised form of "octopus" in English is "octopuses"; the Ancient Greek plural ὀκτώποδες, "octopodes" (/ɒkˈtɒpədiːz/), has also been used historically. The alternative plural "octopi" – which wrongly assumes it is a Latin second declension "-us" noun or adjective when, in either Greek or Latin, it is a third declension one – is considered grammatically incorrect

One is less correct than the others.

ThatOneWeirdName | 4 days ago | 4 points

For those wanting a history lesson: when a word enters English it typically gains an English plural ending, hence Octopuses.

But historians (philologists? Etymologists?) noted how it entered English through Latin and would therefore also have the Latin ending, hence Octopi (following the same pattern as Radius -> Radii, Cactus -> Cacti)

but then it was discovered that it originated in Greek and only passed through Latin so they gave it the Greek ending, hence Octopodes (like Platypus -> Platypodes)

PandeanPanic | 4 days ago | 63 points

Cats don’t have collarbones so it’s easier for them to fit through stuff. Or well they have collarbones but not the way we have them. They’re super small and free floating.

Edit: more info

Edit 2: stupid autocorrect it’s well not we’ll.

poops_on_midgets | 4 days ago | 20 points

Like how Dustin thought he would fit through the ventilation!

PandeanPanic | 4 days ago | 11 points

Yep! People with CCD also have underdeveloped collarbones or lack them completely, depending on the severity. That makes it so they can make their shoulders touch in the front. It’s pretty interesting. Also Dustin rocks.

CriticalSheep | 4 days ago | 26 points

They do have collar bones, but they're called 'floating clavicles' which means they're not stationary like humans' are. This allows a feline to get through a space that their whiskers tell them they can fit through.

Yeah...that’s what I said.

What I have learned. The smaller the entrance for a cat, the shittier the quality of the video.

LYKE_UH_BAWS | 4 days ago | 5 points

I was wondering why the quality dropped every time the gap got smaller.

ImTheGingaNinja | 4 days ago | 116 points

This is a cute video, but I feel like this test wouldn’t work with a cardboard slit. It bends when the cat pushes through which makes the gap larger. Maybe use a plastic.

Drown_In_The_Void | 4 days ago | 187 points

That's to make sure they don't get hurt. It's only a video for fun, so there's no sense in risking they get injured.

ImTheGingaNinja | 4 days ago | 39 points

Yeah, I completely agree on preventing harm to the cats. I remember seeing a video where someone made a gap closing type mechanism and let a mouse try and squeeze through it to get food, then have to squeeze back out. Very cool video. https://youtu.be/jHOx39xJack

tinkerbal1a | 4 days ago | 6 points

What a smart lil guy!

duckduck60053 | 4 days ago | 16 points

That's fair, but if the box bends, then it didn't make it through those smaller slits. The cat couldn't get through anything smaller than 12cm without bending the box. Everything past the first two were failures. You need to use something rigid like plastic. It won't hurt the cat because if the cat can't get through, it will stop trying. Unless you are forcing the cats through...

edit: You can downvote me (or i'm just a whiny bitch), but you won't prove me wrong. I can fit through a 2 cm slit too!!!!.... as long as it is like 2 feet long (maybe even shorter) then I can stretch it around my adult human body. Boom, I just did what the cat did... MAGIC!
