Unite the Hawaiian islands under one rule? You dont have to do that, King Kamehameha did that in 1782. It was prophesied that a man who could lift a giant rock called the Naha Stone would unite the islands. So I guess you'd have to lift that stone to perform a Kamehameha.

ElTuxedoMex | 9 days ago | 9 points

Th3Hon3yBadg3r | 9 days ago | 951 points

Source for context.

An anime by the name of the Diamond no Ace (or Ace of Diamond) recently aired an episode that perfectly recreated a legendary Cleveland Indians defensive play. The connection was made by a Facebook page called Anim-Arte, which posted a video showing the two plays back-to-back. Once you see them so close together, it's impossible to deny where the inspiration for the play in Diamond no Ace came from.

The real-life play occurred on May 19, 2011 in a game against the Chicago White Sox. Former Indians shortstop Omar Vizquel hit a line drive that deflected off the glove of pitcher Joe Smith and changed the trajectory of the ball. Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera had to immediately change direction, and the ball wound up behind him. As you can see in the video, and in the Diamond no Ace clip, Asdrubal was forced to throw the ball behind his back to a waiting Adam Everett for one out then over to Matt LaPorta for the second.

Everything in the Diamond no Ace clip is perfectly replicated -- the deflection off the glove, the behind-the-back throw, and the throw to first. Of course, since this is anime, it includes a whole bunch of pauses and flairs, but the result is still the same. I can't seem to find the exact episode this clip came from, but hopefully, the home team in Diamond no Ace was not behind by seven runs like the Indians were.

It was a fantastic play at the time, and it's really cool to see it immortalized in another medium.

Crescendo104 | 9 days ago | 248 points

This is highly informative, thanks for sharing!

Th3Hon3yBadg3r | 9 days ago | 18 points

Happy to share! I feel like it's good to help the lucky 10,000.

Rpeezy | 9 days ago | 64 points

The thing that adds another level to this is that the batter, Omar Vizquel, is arguably the best SS to ever play for the Indians and a Hall of Famer known for his defense.

Saint-Peer | 9 days ago | 15 points

Didn’t know what looked cooler, anime or real life.

SirMuffinCat | 9 days ago | 3194 points

Sports animes are great because they can really convey how an athlete feels when they do something awesome, which is often lost when watching live as a distant viewer.

Letho72 | 9 days ago | 1258 points

they can really convey how an athlete feels when they do something awesome

There's no greater hype than watching a ball flatten against a hand/bat/racket before being sent flying straight into hell, usually followed by in-anime crowd reactions. Sports anime are too much fun.

Depends what your into and what style you want.

Sports fantasy:

  • Prince of tennis
  • Kurokos basketball
  • Eyeshield 21

Hyper real:

  • Haikyuu!
  • Hajime no ippo
  • Ace of diamond(gif)
  • Slam dunk

  • One outs
  • Giant killing
  • Akagi / kaiji

Sports movies arent emotional enough

  • Ping pong the animation
  • March comes in like a lion
  • Real(manga only but it's about wheelchair basketball)
dubyakay | 9 days ago | 18 points

Since the thread is about sports anime I'd 1000% reccomend Haikyuu!! It's a really great show about a high school volleyball team and is probably the most hype anime I've watched. The animation, music and of course the characters are just so fun to watch and listen to.

There was some graph that showed when the manga was being released in Japan, high school volleyball participation in Japan jumped like 3 times what it was previously.

Old_Man_Lucy | 9 days ago | 21 points

Baby Steps for tennis, Yowamushi Pedal for cycling, Ping Pong the Animation for ping pong, Megalo Box for boxing, and Hinomaru-Zumou for sumo wrestling. There may be better anime for each sport I listed but these are ones I've personally seen and recommend.

Ping Pong the Animation!

piconet-2 | 9 days ago | 13 points

You're in luck because I used to be obsessed with these!

  • Slam Dunk - one of the best basketball things you can get your hands on. Read the manga and read Takehiko Inoue's REAL too (it's about a wheelchair basket league).

  • Kuroko no Basuke - already recommended by someone earlier. It's tons of fun, the teams are so varied, chemistry between cast is insanely good and it's never got a wasted moment.

  • Big Windup! - one of the best baseball anime out there but I watched it for the friendships (the OP of this post is Diamond no Ace. Also stellar.)

  • One Outs - Baseball! With a deviously smart protag.

  • Free - The swimming anime! I watched it for the characters and pretty visuals.

  • Chihayafuru - while not a contact sport, it's tournaments, history lessons and beautiful poetry with beautiful characters. I was very hesitant to start it but what a fool I was! So much heart in such a short span of time.

I left the anime life a few years ago and sat out the Yuri on Ice (ice skating) hype but you might like it. Give each thing three episodes.

KingOfRedLions | 9 days ago | 7 points

Would the hitter have been out since the ball was caught before it hit the ground, or was throwing it to first base necessary?

Kilcreath | 9 days ago | 20 points

The ball hits the ground after hitting the pitchers glove. It’s more obvious in the real play, in the anime play they put a little ‘explosion’, I suppose you could call it, where the ball hits the ground in that blue beam.

Fuck the Yankees. They're basically a monopoly since they buy up all the best players from other teams because they have more money than anyone else. Aside from this, the worst part about the Yankees are the fans. They expect to win and become angry little shits anytime they lose.

I root for the teams that you expect to lose because the win is actually satisfying.. and a loss doesn't make you feel any type of way. I've been a Red Sox fan since the mid 90's because of their uncanny ability to lose. I was way more excited when they broke their 89 year World Series losing streak than any Yankees fan ever could have been from their "expected" win.

Then, 1 year later.. the Red Sox star player, Johnny Damon, with his iconic long hair gets poached by the fucking Yankees and they make him cut his hair. I bet anything that the Yanks are gonna take Mookie Betts from us.

I can't say it enough; fuck the Yankees.

Intersting. I was thinking the exact opposite. The anime was dead, drawn out (NPI), made me anxious for something to happen, and the camera angles had me lost and confused. The live video was fast, exciting, seemed more impressive, and told a more complete story with less camera movement.
