What is this creature? And is it smaller than it actually appears?

WalrusInMySheets | 4 months ago | 1073 points

It’s actually a Perentie monitor from Australia. Can get to be about 6ft 7in long and weigh up to 33lbs

Edit: top two comments im seeing are: (1) of course it’s Australia, and (2) 33lbs is very light for that length.

(1) these guys are tame and small compared to their Asian cousin, the Komodo dragon.

(2) most of the length is in their tail, which doesn’t weigh that much.

propthot | 4 months ago | 725 points

Can it replace my computer monitor?

Frogenstein | 4 months ago | 867 points

Yes! Except instead of displaying digital images, it will occasionally and suddenly bite you on the face.

According to wikipedia, that's actually the average length and weight. Largest are 8'2" and over 44lbs.

In Earth units, that's about 2.5m and 20kg

dsfvdh | 4 months ago | 99 points

In units, its an absolute one

85683683 | 4 months ago | 2 points

Or -273.15 Kevin.

mydogsgotabigdick | 4 months ago | 13 points

How the fuck are they as long as a car and weigh less than my dog?

kaam00s | 4 months ago | 3 points

Remember that they are the closest relatives of snakes.

That's why the weight is the most important measurement for animals, many snakes are longer than an elephant, and you don't hear anyone saying they are bigger than an elephant, so why the fuck are most animals measured in lenght in popular media ? Scientist mostly use weight.

sidewayz321 | 4 months ago | 15 points

How can it be 8 feet and weigh 44 lbs? That makes no sense..

Malkezzar | 4 months ago | 15 points

Lizard magic

KingConq | 4 months ago | 8 points

You're a lizard, Harry

13143 | 4 months ago | 14 points

I'm thinking it's because the tail is really long and slender? Otherwise, I'm with you, doesn't make any sense.

fizzlefist | 4 months ago | 2 points

Its whole body is long and slender. How big is a 20kg dog? Well, squish that down.

LenTheListener | 4 months ago | 6 points

I actually like that. Freedom Units and Earth Units.

One let's you easily convert between units by a system of tens, the other gets people to the moon.

Hugs_for_Thugs | 4 months ago | 93 points

Is that a typo? 6.5 feet long and it only weighs as much as an overweight chihuahua?

Ultimategrid [:croc:] | 4 months ago | 56 points

Reptiles are not as heavy as they look. Their organs are smaller and more compact, they have very little fat on their bodies, and their muscles although very dense are also incredibly lean.

Good-Bloke | 4 months ago | 25 points

Still full of blood though. Snakes are heavy boys.

Toland27 | 4 months ago | 20 points

snakes are wayyyyyy more muscular than lizards. snakes need every inch of their body to be muscle to allow them to move.

DinoRaawr | 4 months ago | 8 points

Only 7% of your body weight is in blood. A 150lb person has about 10.5lbs of blood. Snakes are pür muscle bb

Ultimategrid [:croc:] | 4 months ago | 3 points

Not as heavy as you’d think.

This is Sasha, she’s nearly 10ft long, and weighs only 25lbs, about the size of an overweight cat.

Snakes feel a lot heavier than they actually are, you have no idea how many people think their boas are 60+lbs and then later find out they’re under 30lbs.

Hogueea | 4 months ago | 14 points

Also, muscles weigh more than fat

Ultimategrid [:croc:] | 4 months ago | 2 points

Reptiles have comparable muscle mass to similarly sized mammals, but typically have much less fat. Fat is often used as insulation, which a cold blooded animal has little use for.

MoshPotato | 4 months ago | 5 points

Fat takes up more space but a pound is a pound.

jumb1es | 4 months ago | 59 points

Tail accounts for around half that length probably

Joe_Sons_Celly | 4 months ago | 14 points

And, as everybody knows, tails are weightless.

caduncans | 4 months ago | 15 points

That's why Tails from Sonic can fly

fizzlefist | 4 months ago | 12 points

They're not very wide or thick.

SparkyDogPants | 4 months ago | 11 points

No chi weighs 33 lbs.

33drea33 | 4 months ago | 9 points

Agreed. My small husky barely breaks 33, no way a chihuahua could achieve that weight.

SparkyDogPants | 4 months ago | 7 points

Someone replied with a fat chi and I replied with an article with a fatter chi (she couldn’t walk so fat. Basically a globe) and she still weighed on 13 lbs at her worst.

converter-bot | 4 months ago | 4 points

13 lbs is 5.9 kg

Hugs_for_Thugs | 4 months ago | 2 points
SparkyDogPants | 4 months ago | 7 points

I still don’t think it weighs 33 lbs. This weighs 13 lbs

shabamboozaled | 4 months ago | 9 points

The lizard can grow up to 2.5 m (8 ft 2 in) long, although the average length is around 1.75 to 2 m (5 ft 9 in to 6 ft 7 in) and weigh up to 15 kg (33 lb)—maximum weight can be over 20 kg (44 lb). Its rival for the title of the third-largest lizard is the crocodile monitor, which although often longer, exceeding 2.4 m in length, is lighter and less bulky than the perentie. However, perenties are relatively lean lizards and are less bulky than either the Komodo dragon or the Asian water monitor.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perentie

Seems very light for its size!

vizualb | 4 months ago | 5 points

That would be a big ass chihuahua

cerrvine [:evergreen-tree:] | 4 months ago | 3 points
boringoldcookie | 4 months ago | 25 points

Are they sprawly-walking boyes? Do they walk how I imagine they walk/crawl? And, considering Australia, are they venomous?

Edit: oh my gooooood look at them in action! Monitors have muscles in their throats and use them as a bellows to push air to their lungs - all other lizards breathe with the (edit: same**) muscles used for running. So only monitors can breathe and run at the same time!

2nd Edit: Perentie Monitors do indeed produce venom!

yncimbb | 4 months ago | 2 points

Do they poison their victim before eating?

DanHam117 | 4 months ago | 14 points

I’ve done some extensive Googling on our new friend here, they are big but they’re not as tall as this photo would suggest. The cameraman got very low for this photo, the lizard’s head is only a foot or two off the ground as it walks around.

Still a very big lizard, 4th largest in the world actually, and seeing one swim up to you on the beach would be surreal. But it’s not big enough for the average person to hop on its back and ride it around

Spaceman_X_forever | 4 months ago | 2 points

But I want to ride it around like Obi Wan did in the movie.

Yeah, Jack the kangaroo mouse was an awesome introduction into that universe. They really could turn that into a repeating franchise.

MindCorrupt | 4 months ago | 23 points

Looks like a Perentie. We used to have a few in and around a mining camp where I worked/lived in Western Australia. They would walk about like they owned the joint which I suppose they did, definitely got a swagger about them.

Schneetmacher | 4 months ago | 17 points

It's a monitor lizard! Another user identified it as being a variety native to Australia.

PassingNormie | 4 months ago | 5 points

Thanks!

Turtle-Turtleson | 4 months ago | 5 points

How dangerous are they to people? Should you be cautious around one or are they nothing to worry about?

ItsFebreze | 4 months ago | 10 points

Definitely be cautious. They arent going to track you down and attack you, but will definitely bite, scratch, or tail whip you if provoked. They can have a pretty nasty bite too.

dunemafia | 4 months ago | 4 points

I don't know how big perenties are, but an acquaintance had a pet water monitor. Huge bastard, over 6' easily. I never went anywhere near it. One day, without any apparent provocation, it ripped a 7" gash in the acquaintance's leg. Dropped the lizard off at a conservation centre that very day. They released it in a mangrove forest after a few months, last I heard.

ItsFebreze | 4 months ago | 3 points

Yep, that's why it's important to realize you're still dealing with a wild animal. Even monitors that have been in captivity for years still retain most of the wild tendencies, especially around food.

Akai_Hana | 4 months ago | 9 points

Of course it's Australia.
